What determines the speed of a computer? The more memory, the more speed? Does a 2GB memory computer run faster than a 1GB computer or is it something else? Assume I have a moderate high speed connection. Please answer only if you're familiar with Windows hardware. Any suggestions welcome.

I forgot to mention. I was asking about Windows Vista.

"Speed" is not the right term to use. "Performance" is what you need to compare.

CPU speed, amount of RAM, Graphics, hard drive, programs and connection quality are all factors.

Depends on the version of windows. Basically yes the more RAM the faster as windows then has more to utilize.

This will not make the internet run faster. It'll be as fast as it will be which is governed by your connection speed and whether you're wired or wireless.

What you can do is make windows as lean as possible and fix the swap file size so that windows is not always busy with background programs and trying to increase the swap file as you open more windows online. This is more critical than anything else. Lean and clean.

Most versions of windows will work well in 1gb ram but will do little with the higher amount as it wastes it by having poor memory management. Linux would use it better. The later versions of windows will do better with the larger amounts of ram. Things like 98 worked super with 384mb of ram but not so well with 512mb or more (too much for it to utilize well).
