I have an HP Pavillion 8160 that was given to me. There is one problem. It will not power on. So i took the side off and noticed that the wires to the power button, green , and yellow light were not plugged into the motherboard. I have tried to plug them into the spots on the motherboard with no sucess because there are not enough spots for all three plugs.

Dose anyone know how i can fix this or a website that can help me fix this problem. I have tried HP,com with no sucess.

If your front panel connections are not connected then you need a diagram of your MOBO. Sometime you can look at the Front panel header usually lower right corner of the MOBO (if your lucky they will be labeled but in very small writing) and locate the two PWR Switch pins and connect the lead that says PWR switch to them. You have to have those two pins connected to power the mobo on.
you can also locate the two pins and short them together momentarily with a small screwdriver or anything metallic and the mobo will power on.

The connections are usually PWR Switch, Reset Switch, PWR Led, and HDD Led.

I have an old PWR switch out of an old computer to use on the Front panel pins when I'm working on or building a computer.

Most of the time I setup the computer (build it on my work bench with all components loose) before I install it into a case. And use the PWR Switch only no need for the others at that time.

Before we can give any advice on this problem the make and model number of the motherboard are required.

But, this could also be a power supply problem. I say this because the LED indicators for the power and hard drive do not need to be connected for the motherboard to function. Actually, only the "Power" or "Power Switch" are the only wires that need to be connected.

To test the power supply, disconnect the main power connector from the board and jump the number 14 pin (usually green) to any ground pin (always black). This should start the power supply. If it doesn't, I would install a known good ps to the system and see if it motherboard starts. If not, then the motherboard.

You can learn more about power supply pin outs at the site listed below. You have an "ATX power connector, so look for that in the list.
