I am a student and am thinking of getting a laptop. 1st priority is price, 2nd priority is weight - I do a lot of moving, and 3rd priority is monitor size - I want something that can be open in a lecture hall if needs be. I don't care about DVD's or burning CD's but would like to listen to music, and if possible - write on the screen like a piece of paper for my chemistry classes. I also don't care about being able to play games.

When I search on my own, I don't know the lingo, so if you have any suggestions with a specific model number that worked great for you, please provide so I can look up your identical laptop. That would be the most helpful.

I just don't know what to get! Or how much I really have to pay! Or what "accessories" I really need! Any info would be appreciated!

What is the best student laptop? Any brand, operating system, or whatever. Also, must have a microphone plug in.

Thank you.

It certainly seems so. I'm hoping it will run games on the Doom 3 engine at medium settings, and handle Vista smoothly on the 2GB of ram. Thoughts?

But When I bought my old laptop it was very expensive becuase i made sure i upgraded the ram upto 512 MB for the computer to last for a very long time! And i bought it back in January of 1999 and due to customizing my computer to be fast for a very long time it cost me $5,600 dollars. Back then most laptops were still build with only floppy disk drives and my laptop doesn't have cd rom!

I remember that i can install windows 98 through 6 floppy disks! is there a website that let's me download windows XP and extracted to bottable floppy disks to install windows xp!!! I HEARD IT DOES EXIST BUT I HAVE DIFICULTY FINDING IT!!!

Ofcourse I know that this windows will not be completely full as other windows XP's in General!!! But It will only be Minimally full
just with Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and probebly just My Documents Folder! And then all I am supposed to do is simply download Service Pack 2 to completely Fully update this windows XP! PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN!!!

I have a HP Compaq, pre-made and such.
I have one really annoying question, I have a 24pin socket on the motherboard for power but it came with a 20pin connector in that socket when I got it, it does work, so it obviously is doing its job.
I have a better psu than the one that came with it on order, and that has a "20+4pin" connection for both types of motherboards.
When it comes and I install it should I use the 24pin connection or should I just plugin the 20pin connector.

And what do the extra 4 pins do in these motherboard power sockets anyway?

Thanks,

Daniel

ok i have like a really old tv, well not that old, but its a tube tv. well i tried to turn it on, and it made a shock niose, and turned back off. well at the same time i had windows media player playing some music. and for no reason the music had cut off. i went back to my pc, and i had seen that the music was still playing, just not producing any sound. so i was wondering if anyone knew what had went wrong. my sound does not work at all now. and it only happened after my tv zapped somehow. can anyone help? by the way according to my software files, my sound card is still installed, and so is the driver. hmmm?

I found these instructions:

1) Right click on your desktop and click properties
2) Click settings and then click on the "Advanced" button
3) Now click on monitor and under screen refresh rate, choose a higher refresh rate.

It was supposed to help your eyes from hurting but my screen became blurry. So I set it back to the lower refresh rate.

I recently got a new video card: HIS Radeon X1950 Pro IceQ3 Turbo 512MB/256MB AGP for my computer and i am getting screen artifacts when i am playing 3d games (e.g. little colored dots all over the screen and polygons stretching and tearing...) and the only way to get rid of them is to reboot. I've tried both drivers from the ATI website and hisdigital and it still happens. According to the software tool, the temperature runs pretty low (it usually stays below 50 C), so maybe it isnt an overheating problem? Keeping my case open with a room fan blowing into it seems to reduce the occurance though. Also, my power supply is 350W, a bit lower than recommanded i believe - maybe that is the problem? If so, will underclocking my card help? If so, how?

Besides the mobo, cpu, graphics card, harddrive, psu, RAM, is there an extra component you need to gain internet access? I am sorry, I am a big newbbie, do the new mobo's just grant internet access? Thanks for helping a new guy.

I am starting up a little store, and I need to know what would be the cheapest barcode scanner I can get. I would also like a magnetic stripe reader to attach to my computer.
