I bought a Gateway and absolutely love it. They have stores you can go into and talk to someone, or you can go to their website and buy one from there. They were extremely nice and very helpful!

What are you using it for?
If you're just going to check email, surf websites, and maybe play some mainstream games like the Sims, the cheapest 2007 model you can find is a good one.
If you're making movies and planning to turn your computer into a multimedia machine or a gaming rig, get the high-end computers.
Also, stick with Windows XP. There's a buttload more support for it.
Can't go into specifics when we don't know what you want from a computer.

Go to a computer retailer. Find a good sales person who asks a lot of questions. They can give you a good, better, best selection based on your needs. Also some mfg's online stores kind of give suggestions based on how you will use it.

DO NOT GO TO BEST BUY!!! Call up Dell, tell them what you want to the computer to do, and how much you want to spend. They will build the perfect system for you and they have good deals going always.

You give no explanation of what you want to do with the computer. Any answer you get cannot be helpful without that information.
