Hardware - March 2007

I just bought a laptop pre-loaded with Vista and it's a pain in the butt. Vista has too many compatibility issues with apps that I need to get my work done. I want to install XP on it. I don't have any real critical data or applications on there other than what was pre-loaded and one game that I have the disc for.

Should I just wipe the HD and install XP? If I do so, are there any hidden timebombs because HP pre-configured the machine to work with Vista? Will I need to download and save driver files before I do this?

to get it to work briefly i have to touch the wire. i just bought these bose speakers a couple months ago i have no idea what it is all my wires are connected from speaker to speaker

A friend of mine gave me his OCZ Mini-kart 1gb memory stick after it corrupted itself. It says in My Computer that is's 0 bytes in size and wants me to format it when I try and explore it. When I try and format it (both FAT and FAT32) it just says 'The disk is write-protected'.

The drive has no write protection on it, he did not put it on there and there is no physical switch as some models have. It's corrupted itself and thinks its now write protected.

Any ideas on how to get it working again before I phone the suppliers tomorrow?

it also wont turn off unless i unplug it,its still under warranty will this void that? i just cant get any thing from my monitor

It says either "there is no disc in drive, insert disc and try again." or "Windows media player cannot record to disc. then two buttons close or more info" well i clicked on the more info and did everything they suggested but it still won't work. I just burned one like two weeks ago just fine...i don't know what has gotten into the thing. Help???

I tried cleaning it and I don't know what to do. If i can get rid of that noise my laptop would be in perfect shape. I am on my laptop alot and sending it back to get it fixed takes to much time. I brought a dust cleaner in a can and it still makes noise. When its really powering up it's even louder.. What can I do to stop this noise, I took it out and examined it .. It looks clean but when i put it in. its like a very very small gap or something. its hard to explain. but If anyone experienced this let me know. I know it's not my hard drive. Im pretty good with computers, but I just wanna know what I can do thanks !!

This drive won't open when I press the button, and I know the "stick a paper clip in there," and it opened, but when I stuck a CD in there, it made no move and completly ignored it. I have tried looking at the software- that's not it, and I've opened it up and re-connected the "plug" and I have restarted it many times- none of it worked. I just got the new Sims 2 expansion pack- Seasons- and I am so disappionted I can't install and play it. Please help! Thanks in advance.

I dont understand what they are. I know they are computer storage units but I dont know how to convert them or use them. I want to save up to get an ipod but with all these 4GB and 2GB stuff i dont know which one would be good enough for my musical collection and enough to add some more. So please Help!

My Epson C66 printer is recognized by my Mac. It even tries to print when I tell it to. It just prints blank pages though, and I JUST installed new cartriges. I dont have the manua either. Please help

Need help with a dvd-rw driver?
Bought a dvd-rw from newegg to replace my cd-rw for my laptop. Can't seem to find the driver anywhere.

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite A85-S107
DVD-R: Optiarc AD-5540A

Optiarc is a company by Sony/NEC and they are newly developed so their site isn't fully up yet. Don't have the driver because I bought it "OEM" so I'm on my own. If anybody can point me towards a driver or install program I would really appreciate it.

Suppose when i plug in my usb removable drive, the windows will detect it and an autoplay will start automatically after few seconds but for me since yesterday it doesn't start. Before yesterday, it did start the autoplay automatically. For information, i didn't modify any system file yesterday. I'd checked the autoplay setting, it is enabled. I even checked the autoplay setting by using powertoy tweakUI, the autoplay setting is enabled. If I try with my another usb removable drive, same problem occurs. How come the autorun do not start itself?

I have such an item for sale on Ebay and a potential purchaser has asked the question - I can not answer. I used a Serial 8079 dot matrix printer which plugged straight into the QL computer with a different interface. . . . no knowledge of any other ! If you are either (or both) old enough / experienced enough to answer we would both be grateful.
