Hardware - February 2007

I just got a new hard drive for storage and I was gonna stick the old storage drive in a closet, when it occured to me- can I keep that one as well? That'd be 3 drives, my main drive and 2 storage and I'm wondering if that could somehow tax the machine too much or put too much strain on the fan, etc.

Anyone have any idea on this? I know the "BIOS" can support a certain number of drives, but I have no idea how many or how to even check that.

My wife was reading blogs on the Internet and the computer just shut down for no reason. Then I smelled something burning. So I unplugged the power cord. After a little while, I tried to turn on the computer, but it won't come on. My wife is going crazy since she had her dissertation stored on the hard drive. Is there any way to retrieve the data without paying a fortune? Help needed!

I'm trying to install a brand new canon pixma printer to my dell laptop (windows2000). I have inserted the installation disk but the computer cannot locate the printer. When I try to manually select a driver from the list i'm getting a list of LPT 1 2 and 3, Com 1 2 3 and 4, FILE, IR and MSFAX. Whenever I select one of these, the computer then recognises the printer but whenever i try to print it comes up "printer not responding". The printer came with a lead with a USB connection and i've tried it in all the USB slots.

Very frustrated, any ideas anyone????

I am looking for an inexpensive laptop, something to replace my desktop for something requiring less space. I don't do anything fancy with it, just surf, pay bills etc...I am looking for at least a
80G hard drive
duo core processor (preferably)
1 G memory (but I can add later if I need to)
Processor speed is not important 1.6 is fine
and CD DVD burner
I have seen compaq, acer and toshiba that are between 480-700 (with these features) which is where I'd like to stay. However I have no experience with these models, which is better?

Mostly it will stay at home and gaming is not important, we are keeping the desktops they are just being moved to to another location.

it happend before few times it always happend when i plug out and in....and i had to wait for few min like 5 min then i coul turn that on.......but now for a last time after plug that out and in....after few weeks.....it happend and monitor never turn on again....now i am using my roomate computer and i can not use my computer....i don't know what to do?? culd you help me fix this problom...??? thank you very much guys

theres a baloon that pops up near the time (bottom right corner of screen)
"saying that theres files waiting to be written"
and its in d drive
so i double click the icon and theres a d drive folder and if u click it its empty,and ur still on d drive folder,empty(becomes a loop hole) repetitive,it just repeats and repeats,anyone knw this problem pls answer ASAP

I'm not sure if my computer can handle a bigger hard drive. There is no extra space on my computer. I have a 37.2 gb hard drive and someone told me i could replace that with a bigger one. Is that possible? How do i know if my computer can handle it?

I recently installed AIM 6.0 because I was having trouble with AIM 5.9. Now, every time I try to send a message, AIM shuts down completely without an error message or anything. It just shuts down.
I'm having issues with my video card and motherboard, so I'm not expecting this to be an easily fixable problem if it is at all.

There it is. This looks pretty amazing for such a low cost as well as free shipping and I am considering buying it. However I am not sure if it has a TV tuner so I could connect a TV cable to it and use it as a TV as well. Does anyone know if it does have one?

If not, is there a cheap way I could make this usable as a TV? If so, how and where?

when you buy an external drive does it come with a cd/dvd drive too (one with a dvd rw) or do you have to buy it separately. i know i probably sound like an idiot. i am wanting an extra drive and cd/dvd rw. i dont have a dvd rw right now. my computer can't be upgraded anymore. its reached its limit. i only have a 37.2 gb hard drive and 512 ram. im running xp. i want an extra drive and an external cd/dvd rw. can i do anything without buying a brand new computer?
