Basically you have all the info you need form the other answers, but be forewarned; if you have never done a complete defrag, the process may take many-many hours, sometimes more then 24. Microsoft's defragger isn't the best, but its better then not defragging.

Plan to run defrag at night when you're sleeping. It's best to disconnect form the Internet and turn off every program that is running, such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, and so on, including as many items in the Task Try as you can. This will speed up the defrag.

Once the job is completed, run defrag no less than once a month, it won't take as long then.

Personally I run Diskkeeper on all my computers, its faster, does a better job and runs in the background daily.

Do a Web search and learn what defrag is and what's taking place when you run defrag.

...
I assume you are using MS Windoz.
Before defrag, clean up your system.
Update and run your anti-this and anti-that programs.
Download Ccleaner and run it. It is free and very good.

Don't do a defrag without first cleaning up
viruses, spyware, unused files, etc.

To use Windoz's defrag
go to
START
PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
DEFRAGMENTER.
I may have this path wrong since I haven't
used Windoz in some time.

I'm a Linux user.
We don't have to defrag.

Good luck,
