If this is an USB printer, you need to do things a bit differently then with older printers. With some USB driven Printers (and other devices) you may need to load the software from the CD first (before connecting the printer). After loading the drivers, try rebooting. After the laptop reboots, plug in the Printer. Hopefully 2000 will notice a new device. If it doesn't, try rebooting with the Printer plugged in and on.
If that doesn't work, go to the Canon site to see if there are updated drivers. Remember, Windows 2000 doesn't have a list of drivers the way Windows XP does. 2000 has limited Plug n Play support.

The computer list of available ports does not have the USB controller, which is what you'll need since your printer is USB.
The LPT ports are for printers with a parallel cable connector; COM ports are for serial printers, FILE is for a virtual printer spool file, etc.
You will need to create a new port, a USB port. The second answerer is correct, go through the "create new port" process.
If that does not work, you may want to try using a parallel-USB convertor cable, and drive the printer through a parallel printer port.

turn off the computer, and walk away for a half hour... get somthing to eat and drink,... then come back...
now, after your little break come back, and then unplug the computer from the printer, and turn on your computer.
then uninstall all the software that came with the printer.
then turn off your computer and then restart it.
install the software But Do Not plug in the printer untill you are asked to by the software or instructions with the software.
then it should work.
see im guessing the problem is that the printer was hooked up to the computer before the drivers were installed, so the computer said, ok what the heck am i to do with this thing? so now, we will first tell the computer what we want it to do with it, then plug it in...
hope that helps

When you are installing and it asks which port select Create a new Port. It will then allow you to select the USB bus.

Yes, take it with you laptop to the shop where you bought it. Preferably at a not too busy time. And then ask them what you're doing wrong. Failing that isn't there a telephone number for help?
