Dual Core has been around for years now like 2 CPUs on the same motherboard. All it realy is two into one. So my question is, why the big hype?

Dual CPU != Dual Core. Think of packaging and motherboard real estate.

It has been around. Intel is pushing it more as a marketing ploy to draw attention away from the fact that AMD, although slower in overall MHz, has affordable 64-bit processors for budget or low end users.

AMD is making a splash with cheap 64-bit PC's, Intel is rocking their total gigahertz as their advantage, but with a flaw: Core 2 Duo, despite having a higher L2 Cache and faster motherboard socket is still less in GHz than the Pentium D class (also Dual-core, hence the "D"), which can reach 3.2 GHz. And Pentium D is cheaper than Core 2 Duo.

Dual core is simply less of a new advancement and more their mechanism of advertising the "how" to customers, despite the fact that it is nothing really new.

Basically dual cpu motherboards are hard to come by in the desktop market. Dual Cores allow you to use one single cpu chip but get two cpus and thus is compatible with all single cpu motherboards (and you can even put two dual core chips on the same dual-cpu motherboard)

Hi Anointed71,

Wasn't there benefits with the less amount of heat and power the Dual Core needs or gives off?
