i would like to upgrade my memory on my Vaio and I would like to use just One 1gb card rather than Two 512mb cards. Can this be done on a Sony Vaio? Would it be any cause of concern to use Two 512mbs? From the info. I got my pc has to slots available for upgrade and it seems to tell me to use Two 512mbs. Is a One 1gb compatible with my system and which is the best brand to use? Thanks

When I first boot up my computer, I'm finding that the first program I open will have sound enabled, but any other programs I open after the first won't have sound (no matter the program). When I try clicking on the sound icon, it says that I have no mixer devices enabled, which I'm sure I do. Could this be a virus? How can I fix this?

Ok, I am not dumb, I consider myself pretty tech savvy, but I cannot figure this out. Obviously I know how to format a disk, by right mouse clicking on the a: drive and clicking format and going through the stps, but I get a Windows message that says the disk cannot be formatted.

So I opened the command prompt window and typed format a:/x
Doing that I got:
The type of the file system is RAW.
The new file system is FAT.
Formatting 1.44M
Invalid Media or track 0 bad - disk unusable

Oh, and typing format a: /FS:FAT/x gives me the same error

It is a brand new floppy, I just bought a brand new box of floppies.
And please don't tell me to use some more sophisticated media because believe me I would if I could, but I can't, it's for school, and I have to use floppies.

I am not running any antivirus software so that is not preventing me from reformatting the hard drive.

So if anyone has a different solution, I would love to hear it.

Hello again:

Someone gave me a printer that may work but the off and on switch is broken. I looked inside and a pin seems to be away from its original position. The printer is an IBM 4029. I know this is an old model printer but I had one some time ago and it printed fantastically. So much so, that when it printed, the characters were raised from the sheet of paper and they were crystal clear.

My question is, if the off and on switch is broken, does that mean the printer is broken too?

Is there a way I can fix the switch myself?

Thanx
beccan

I have a flat panel 17' viewable monitor in which the screen has been shaking/jittering in a side to side motion since installing Vista Premium to a partitioned hard-drive. I also have XP Pro on a different partition and I get none of this when it's in use.

The screen seems to stabilize in Vista as long as I am not moving the mouse to open a window, start a program, etc. I noticed also that Vista set my screen resolution to max (1280x1024) with the refresh rate at 60hz. In XP it's set at 1024x768 (60hz). I adjusted the setting somewhat in Vista to see if this would improve things, but the shakes/jitters are still there. I really don't know much about refresh rates and these monitor settings, or what ever it could be that's making this happen suddenly, so I hoping that someone here could advise on what to do.

My computer is a AMD 64x2, 2.2 ghz processor with 1gig of installed ram, and my graphics card is an Nvidia Gforce 6100, built into the motherboard utilizing 256megs of ram.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop model P35-S609. We bought it several years ago.

Sometimes the audio works and sometimes it doesn't. Right now the audio doesn't work when I try to listen to an internet TV program such as on www.cbsnews.com. But when I boot up and shut down the computer, the normal Microsoft Windows XP type command sounds are heard.

We are getting a new computer this weekend and want to give our old one to the kids for games and stuff. We have a Compaq Presario but it has a bunch of stuff on it and we don't have any software that may have come with it (got it used.) Is there a way to wipe it clean and then reload the basic stuff like windows, explorer....

Right now it runs a bit slow and the kids complain that it makes game playing difficult. What can we do? Thanks!

It's very important I install better drivers, because the resolution with the Standard drivers that come with Windows 98 SE is very poor and the colours are also poor...
