it just simple prob man first turn on your pc and press delete key 2 times and it go to the bios setup page be careful about this page . in this page you will see the number of items in the page inthat thing you will seethe cmos setup and ef your external hard disk is shown means you hard disk is good and not correpted.and get in the page the advanced bios tab select that in the main page and enter it in there you will see the first boot device and second boot device and third etc. select your first boot device as your external harddrive and second as your cd rom or dvd romand the third as your floppy disk etc.after this press ithe f10 key to save your settings in the cmos page.and then the system will restart and enter into the desired os of yours.

You should first check to see if you motherboard supports booting from USB. That is what is holding you back. The second theing you can try is to get hold of a Windows 98 boot disk and run scanddisk to check your internal hard drive. Or, you can just buy another internal and reinstall.

Using an external hard drive for the OS is an exercise in frustration.

Is your internal hard drive have data on it?
If so move the data off
run DFT (drive fitness test) from IBM (or anothe hard drive tester) to see if the drive is bad
If ok, then boot with your windows cd in, tell is to delete the c: partition, and continue installing a new windows

External drives should only be used for basic storage

most external harddrives are just regular harddrives in plastic cases i would first go into the bios ussually f8 or the del key and have it boot off of external device. if that doesnt work most older bios' dont have that option. i would take apart the external and install it into my pc but this would take abit of skill due to the size of the disk 2.5 of 3.5 and the jumper setting CS, Master, Slave

since your computer recognizes the external hard disk as a usb drive, you need to setup your bios to boot from the usb. start you computer and hit either f12 or one of the f keys - it varies depending on the system and go to bios. good luck!

your bios has to be set up to be able to boot to external media then select the external to install os to in options this may not work if your comp wont recognize the external in bios screen on older laptops
