after changing the "display mode" most of my desktop icons lost their pictures. can i get them back?

Look up a small program on the net called TweakUI,... it's very small and can 'repair' your icons easily and quickly. it does many other small tasks, but the icon repair is just one of many.

try this
right click your desktop and select "Arrange icons by" "Name"
sometimes a resolution change will not refresh the desktop icons and they will be "hidden" off screen
