Is there anything I need to turn on on either the router or the laptop? or is there something else i need to do?

Yes, i got a netgear router too, i think i know your problem.
Go to the router settings 192.168.0.1
click on "Wireless Settings" then "Setup access list" then you should see your laptop, Well the device name and Mac address, clik on your click on your wireless device and press add then don't forget to apply the settings.

I'm hope that info solved your problem :)

There's a tiny switch on the side or underneath to turn the wireless adaptor on.

Or it might be an second funciton key (Pess the blue Fn key and one of the keys that looks like an aerial thingy)

What does the laptop say when you "View available wireless networks"?

Is it searching and just doesn't see the connection?
