Hardware - June 2006

I use it at home with its Wifi technology. The other computers in this house do just fine and don't disconnect randomly. My laptop says the signal is pretty strong, but it'll just randomly... go AWAY, then come back a few seconds later. It's really annoying. Is there any way to stabilize the connection, or is there an advanced option I need to change? In properties, there are several ways to connect, but I just used the defaul, which is Ad Hoc mode. Could this have something to do with it?

I'm looking to find out about the effective lifespan of a cd-rom with music wriiten on it. How long is this? .Is the quality of the disc an issue? . Or th filetype?. Why would a cd-rom have a shorter lifespan than a shopbought cd.

I just got a new cd rom / cd writer / dvd rom installed in my computer after the old one failed. This one reads cd's at 52X (so did the old one, actually), but some of my cd's (not all of them, but some), make horrible rattling and whining noises when at the lowest speeds. My Tiger Woods game is nearly unplayable because of this (it's so horrible to listen to). This didn't happen in my old CD rom (which, by the way, was also 52X). What's wrong here? Any suggestions?

Ok, I formatted my computer and rienstalled windows on it. Now it wont recognize any of my hardware except the hard disk. I have a ATI X600 and it doesnt recognize it and it doesnt recognize the sound card or internet connection. I have done all that Compatibility and stuff and taken the card out and put it back in. Just last night, and then again this morning, as soon as the printer stopped printing the computer crashed. The tray at the bottom of the screen showed the Printer to be active. It usually disappears at the end of a print job.
My computer would not turn off so rebooting is out of the question.
I know it is bad for the computer, but I wound up having to unplug everything, then start it up again.
What can I do and how do I do it?

I heard that there is a certain thing that you can do to burn a dvd onto cd... I dont know if it will be compressed or not but is there a something that will do this?Will I be able to do this directly on to a cd?thanks

Had the dust blown out and noise seems louder. All suggestions welcome about how to reduce the noise or how to live with it without going crazy. Guy who blew out the dust told me the noise came from my processor fan. Is that the same as the CPU fan? Tried ear plugs and the noise penetrated the plugs. HELP.

it will read a disc with something on it, but when i put a blank disc in, it will either read error, or when i go to burn it will tell me to put in a blank disc. any answers will be appreciated
