I just got a new cd rom / cd writer / dvd rom installed in my computer after the old one failed. This one reads cd's at 52X (so did the old one, actually), but some of my cd's (not all of them, but some), make horrible rattling and whining noises when at the lowest speeds. My Tiger Woods game is nearly unplayable because of this (it's so horrible to listen to). This didn't happen in my old CD rom (which, by the way, was also 52X). What's wrong here? Any suggestions?

So should I just try to switch the game for a different CD..or is it the CD drive that needs switching?

That would usually sound like an unbalanced CD disk. The lack of balance will cause the disk to wobble then rub or adjacent surfaces, causing the noise.

Since this never happened with the old CD drive, it may need your new one. The motor or wheel where the CD rests may be unbalanced. If the drive is under warranty, I would definitely return it. I would even consider getting a different model - it may be a flaw in the drive's design.

Care full! If the CD too old or seems not to be good. By default, when you insert the CD to its drive, your CD/CDRW/DVD will read it in DVD mode, you know, a fast DVD speed will take mistake more than a CD speed. I have got a new DVD drive, it read everything so fast but it can't do so with the old music disc, even stops while the old CD drive doesn't.
Upgrade the Firmware of your CD/CDRw/DVD drive on your vendor site may solve your problem.
