There are two different formats of writable media DVD+R and DVD-R (there is also DVD-RW and DVD+RW but we wont discuss that here they are the same only they can be written many times like a rewritable cd).

If you use DVD-R to write your dvd's and they don't play then try DVD+R. If neither works then there might be something wrong with the way you are burning them, or it might be to do with the dvd player itself.

Recordable support varies. over all most players seem to be compatibel with DVD-R.

Some DVD players will play DVD-R, some will play only DVD+R, and some will play both, some will play niether.

If you get problems with both formats then try a different brand. I reccommend Verbatim since they have a very good compaitibility rate. Some times a dvd player will play iether format but the media you are using is incompatible with your player.

If you are burning with something like NERO remember to set your project DVD-VIDEO. Also first try burning at a slower speed as this will increase the quality of the burn(not the actual video but the chemical bonds/pit imprints). 8x is good but sometimes 4 is better for certain models. 16x is overkill.

If all else fails try a dvd+RW.

you need to be sure to buy the cd/dvd that will be compatible with your dvd player. some are only compatible with your computer!

If your DVD player is region-encoded, your DVDs must be matched with the region.

distinctive discs are encrypted in a distinctive way, they are area particular, in case you disc is for area a million, u . s . a ./canada, then it won't play in a participant from yet another area, and vice versa. they are encoded thusly to circumvent piracy.
