Which is better and why?

I don't know why, but after switching ISPs, my internet connection seems to grind to a halt intermittently on my Macbook Pro laptop. After I deactivated the WPA security mode, it went back to normal. When I tried setting up WEP encryption, I couldn't even connect to my (Belkin) router (it said password incorrect, when I entered the correct password. Now I have no security mode enabled and I am just using MAC address filtering with my laptop. Will this be an adequate security setup for my home network?

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It is a Linksis Wireless-B 2.4 GHz router. What baffles me is that my wife's laptop always picks up the signal from the router, but my laptop only picks it up intermittently. And furthermore, my laptop also picks up signals from about 3 or four other wireless routers in the neighborhood.

We recently built a house, but we still haven't fully set up our internet/network. We have DSL from bellsouth, but the service only comes through one phone cord on the first floor of our house. We have a wireless router providing internet to all of our laptops, but thats about it. We have phone jacks labeled "CAT5e+" in every room. Also, there is a box in our basement that looks like this:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t274/Jalinovi/IMG_0643.jpg

My question is: is there any way I could connect an ethernet/cat5 cable to the wall from the router on the 1st floor, and somehow reroute that to another room?? We have an xbox that we would like to connect up on the 3rd floor, so that is why I'm asking.

I hope this made sense, and thanks in advance!

I have 2 pcs. One has windows 2000 pro, the other win98. I want to control both with the windows 2000 pc- including being able to run scandisk/ defrag from the 2k to the 98 pc. I have them networked, sharing drives from the 98 to the 2K, but still no access to run the scnadisk/ defrag. I do not have the original OS disks for the win 2K, either. Any ideas ? - from EXPERIENCED pc users ?

If i put my gigabit switch inside the router, I understand that the internet will always be slower, but if I transfer files between two computers capable of gigabit ethernet attached to my gigabit switch, will the fact that my 10/100 router is attached to the switch also slow down the transfer between the gigabet computers?

Hi I really need help with this one
3 Computers in a network 2 pc s are running win2000 and the 3rd win98. The main PC we will call W2000 is the main PC and the other pc's connect to this one for internet access and folders etc... Problem is W2000 is slowly dying and keeps shutting down. How do I replace the entire PC and start using the new PC with windows XP or Vista. Can i just plug in the new PC and the other PC's will connect via the router? Or are their settings to write down from the old W2000 pc to input into the replacment pc ?
thanks

Why is my WIFI internet connection so slow? I have ATT Yahoo DSL with speed 1.5mbs,I couldve always downloaded things at 160kilobytes/s.But now it is only like 12 kilobytes/s.Internet is like more than 10 times as low. I have Belking 54G router and Hawking HWP54G wireless card. What happened was I download latest drivers for my card ,specificaly Rev R and my connection improved from low to very good and the speed is almost constant 54mbps which seems good, and it stopped disconnecting for no reason. But speed in reality is very very slow.Could this new driver cause the problem, but why?Everything improved but the speed. Or is it mabe because I changed channel on router from 11 to 2?How can I fix this? What is wrong?I appreacite any help?

You have formatted a drive while doing a Linux installation for a production server. The formatting revealed that there were several bad blocks. You see that the bad blocks make up about four percent of the total disk. Which of the following would be the best course of action?

*Reformat the drive with a high level format.
*Reformat the drive with a low level format.
*Replace the drive.
*Mark the blocks as "bad" and continue the installation.

We are setting up a new household and my wife is getting a desktop pc. I am getting my first laptop and we want to share a printer. She is happy at a desk while I want to take the laptop outside or to the den or poolside. I don't want to share my info/network connection with the neighbors. Since we are getting everything new, we can get whatever equipment is required. BTW, do I want draft N?
