I have a LAN network set up through a hub. Theres the ethernet going into the hub and then the 2 computers. Well the Gateway with XP I have hooked upto the hub seems to be working fine, but on my Dell with Vista keeps giving me a "Cannot communicate with DNS server(my I.P.) message. Well I havent been able to find a solution to that yet... but when I go to my "shared" folders and double click one it says a remote firewall may be blocking it and it tells me that the info is: SymNetDrv Firewall Filter INBOUND_TRANSPORT_V4, which the Sym makes me think it might be my Nortons Internet Security. I'm about to go look through that and poke and prod, but does anyone have any idea on how to solve either of these dilemmas? Thanks alot.

I know nothing about routers or wireless cards, except for the fact that I may need one. Here's my situation:

We have wireless internet, only about 1MB speed -- we hardly ever see that except after about 10-11 'o clock. We have a second computer that we want to hook up that does not have a wireless card installed. We don't want to spend a lot of money. I've had a few people tell me $50 bucks for each and we should be set? After looking at the range of prices and brands of routers out there... I'm more confused than ever. Can anyone give me the simple answer and tell me which ones are good? I would like to keep it under $50, but if I need to pay more for added security, I'm not opposed to that.

Also, here's another stupid question (I'm about as computer illiterate as they come) -- is 1MB of download speed enough to have two computers connected at the same time? If my husband and I wanted to play a yahoo game, what's the chances that our speeds will be enough?

Thanks ya'll..

In order to use the "wireless router", do i HAVE to connect it physically to the DSL or cable modem (through the port on the back)?? OR is it also possible to use the router without connecting it to the modem (so that i can place the router far away from the modem)??

I have two pcs and i want to have a comcast cable modem on each. I already have one. And please dont say get a router. Would i be able to go to a store and purchase another modem, call comcast and have them add the serial# or whatever it is to my account so it will connect? How much would it cost? I thought you were able to do this and it was like an extra $5 a month on your bill for each modem or double if you want another static i.p address, but i dont remember so can anyone back me up on this? I have had two routers already. This is what i decided i want to do if i am right about what i said in the question.

I talked to a comcast person online but for some reason i dont believe this is correct:
chat id : 3b1fe5af-393c-4a1b-aa83-53e5666ba7a4
Problem : Connection/Other
dan > Hello
Sean > Please wait, while the problem is escalated to another analyst
Lesley > Thank you for contacting Comcast, my name is Lesley. How can I help you today?
dan > have two pcs and i want to have a comcast cable modem on each. I already have one. And please dont say get a router. Would i be able to go to a store and purchase another modem, call comcast and have them add the serial# or whatever it is to my account so it will connect? How much would it cost? I thought you were able to do this and it was like an extra $5 a month on your bill for each modem or double if you want another static i.p address, but i dont remember so whats the deal here lesley.
Lesley > Do you mind holding while I do some research on the matter?
dan > No problem
dan > Also, So if i am paying say $50 a month for my internet now, i buy another modem, tell you guys the number on the bottom of it, it would be $55 a month?
Lesley > If you want to add a second modem to your home, you will need another account and pay for another service in your home. However, you can purchase a switch or a splitter and use it to split the connection that you already have in your home into two modems.
dan > U mean split the Coax?
Lesley > That is an option, but it is not supported by Comcast.
dan > Well i have a coax on the wall in just about every room in my house, and the pcs are in seperate rooms
dan > So i would have one cable modem in room connected to a pc and the same thing in another room. (seperate wall coax jacks)
Lesley > Do you mind holding while I do some research on the matter?
dan > Sure
Lesley > You should be able to hook up two modems to separate cables in different rooms. However, you are not guaranteed the best connection.
dan > So your saying it would work but the connection would be split between the two modems
Lesley > Yes, that is correct.
dan > so if the speed i have now using one modem is 6mbs, i get 2 modems, they will each have 3mbs?
Lesley > I'm not sure what speeds you will experience, Dan, but your connection may be compromised.
dan > Would both modems/computers be able to be on at the ssme time?
Lesley > They should be able to.
dan > Kind of like having a router
dan > What would the cost be?
Lesley > Sort of, except a router would give you a better connection.
Lesley > There is no cost, you would only pay the same as what you are now because your service hasn't changed.
dan > Would i have to call and tell you the number on the bottom of the modem so it can connect to you guys?
Lesley > Yes, that will register the modem on our system.
dan > Ok
dan > Thank you very much
Lesley > If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again or visit our FAQs page at: http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/ It was a pleasure assisting and speaking with you today. Thank you for choosing Comcast. Goodbye.

exactly as says. no problem connecting to the router, but connecting to the internet is a problem. things ive tried: making connection settings automatic, no firewall problem, drivers up to date, allowing other computers to connect, creating and deleting networks, disabling networks, restarting computer and router, trying to connect to other routers that i know work (one router was password protected and another wasnt. neither work), cant connect any other computer to it (but used to be able to), going in through dos and releasing and renewing etc., and still no luck. now the only thing i can figure is not WAP or anything but rather PPPoe connection? before i start calling isp's i need some advice. thanks folks

Hi!

I was wondering how would I go about trying to connect a second router to another. My modem and wireless router are located in my living room. But most of where i do my work is in my office . Which the connection to the wireless is weak ,forcing me to use a switch and connect wired to my laptop. I have a spare wireless router laying around .And was think was it possible to take the switch out and replace it with the 2nd wireless router, giving me a better signal in my office.

Hardware I have

cable modem
wireless router 2 (linksys) dont know model
linksys switch
