Your ordinary modem has nothing to do with dsl, and can not use it. It only ties up the phone line, the bandwidth for this is normally pretty well fixed, so it does not affect the broadband. You should be connecting through a USB broadband modem or a router.

If you have DSL you shouldn't be using a 56K modem anymore.

You might want to take a look at how you actually have your system hooked up.

The main things that will cause speed problems with DSL are your computer itself (90%) and the wiring in your house. If you have an older house, you might want to consider getting a 'home run' or a shielded cable directly from the service point to where your computer is located. This will eliminate problems stemming from old telephone wiring.

As far as the computer is concerned, get adaware personal from lavasoft.com for free. Make sure it is updated, and run a full scan. You can also download some free virus scans in case you have any other junk on your machine.

as others have said your 56k dial up modem has nothing to do with dsl.

Near as I can tell SBC uses westell dsl modems although maybe yhou have a different one. SBCs help page was kinda lame it had some bad links that didnt work so i dunno.

would help to know what speed you are signed up for and what dsl modem you have etc.
