In order to use the "wireless router", do i HAVE to connect it physically to the DSL or cable modem (through the port on the back)?? OR is it also possible to use the router without connecting it to the modem (so that i can place the router far away from the modem)??

Well, you could, but you wouldn't be able to get anywhere.

What I mean is that any computer connected to the router either by wireless or by being connected to it will be able to access each other, but if you don't connect the modem to it, you can't get out to the internet.

No. The "wireless" part refers only to the computer connections to the router, not the modem connection. The modem has to be connected by a cable.

No you can use a wireless router without any internet connection, you would only be able to share files and printers.

the easy answer is, "confident." ...yet why could you prefer to bypass to the fee of a router whilst an common instantaneous NIC could suffice? you may get USB instantaneous adapters for $10 or much less. which would be a much greater logical attitude with out any configuration hassles.
