I have two pcs and i want to have a comcast cable modem on each. I already have one. And please dont say get a router. Would i be able to go to a store and purchase another modem, call comcast and have them add the serial# or whatever it is to my account so it will connect? How much would it cost? I thought you were able to do this and it was like an extra $5 a month on your bill for each modem or double if you want another static i.p address, but i dont remember so can anyone back me up on this? I have had two routers already. This is what i decided i want to do if i am right about what i said in the question.

I talked to a comcast person online but for some reason i dont believe this is correct:

Lesley > Do you mind holding while I do some research on the matter?
dan > No problem
dan > Also, So if i am paying say $50 a month for my internet now, i buy another modem, tell you guys the number on the bottom of it, it would be $55 a month?
Lesley > If you want to add a second modem to your home, you will need another account and pay for another service in your home. However, you can purchase a switch or a splitter and use it to split the connection that you already have in your home into two modems.
dan > U mean split the Coax?
Lesley > That is an option, but it is not supported by Comcast.
dan > Well i have a coax on the wall in just about every room in my house, and the pcs are in seperate rooms
dan > So i would have one cable modem in room connected to a pc and the same thing in another room. (seperate wall coax jacks)
Lesley > Do you mind holding while I do some research on the matter?
dan > Sure
Lesley > You should be able to hook up two modems to separate cables in different rooms. However, you are not guaranteed the best connection.
dan > So your saying it would work but the connection would be split between the two modems
Lesley > Yes, that is correct.
dan > so if the speed i have now using one modem is 6mbs, i get 2 modems, they will each have 3mbs?
Lesley > I'm not sure what speeds you will experience, Dan, but your connection may be compromised.
dan > Would both modems/computers be able to be on at the ssme time?
Lesley > They should be able to.
dan > Kind of like having a router
dan > What would the cost be?
Lesley > Sort of, except a router would give you a better connection.
Lesley > There is no cost, you would only pay the same as what you are now because your service hasn't changed.
dan > Would i have to call and tell you the number on the bottom of the modem so it can connect to you guys?
Lesley > Yes, that will register the modem on our system.
dan > Ok
dan > Thank you very much
Lesley > If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again or visit our FAQs page at: http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/ It was a pleasure assisting and speaking with you today. Thank you for choosing Comcast. Goodbye.

Jeez, this is not rocket science. If you pay for another connection you will get the same service levels on both machines. Cable IS is a shared medium so it is no worse than when your neighbor puts in their own cable modem. The advantage to two modems is with the upstream limiters put in place to limit the bandwidth to a single modem. So theoretically you have more bandwidth available. Practically the cable segment is probably oversubscribed to a point where limiters are not often needed as the overall customer load on the segment limits the actual throughput. Is the possible performance improvement worth it? Maybe, but do not get your hopes up.

Where you might see an actual issue in implementing this solution is with the signal levels. By splitting the cable you add a 3 db loss at every split. So by doing so you will lessen the signal to both devices. This is not necessarily a real issue unless you already have a marginal signal. Normally high quality cable and splitters will do the job, but a $100 bidirectional cable amplifier will deal with most signal level issues.

If you want to have internet on 2 computers, you are better off getting a router because with 2 modems, you would get charged for 2 internet services, whereas with a router, you pay roughly as low as $40 one time and that's it.

cable modems use your MAC address on the original machine that it was configured with. the MAC address on your laptop is different. if you call comcast to reset it to work with the laptop then youll have to do the same thing over and over switching between the two. I would suggest going with the router and during setup of the router have it clone your desktop pc's MAC if this is the computer your connection was setup with. Routers are fairly cheap and easy to configure.

I would think that it would be a matter of different IP's. Both modems will not be able to have the same IP. The advantage of a router is DHCP that will lease different addresses to each computer. Your IP is assigned by the provider and cannot be changed by the user. If you can manage to use 2 different ones, it will work. However, doubtful.

I think the guy is on crack....

If you only have one account.. When you boot the 1st modem it queries the ISP and get it's IP address.

When you boot the 2nd modem, it queries the ISP, sees your account already has an IP assigned to it and rejects.

By adding the 2nd modem in "the system" it allows that 2nd modem to connect. but if the 1st is online ....I don't think so....

If the 1st is shut-down,...you'll connect with that 2nd one , but when you fire up the 1st one... declined....

well the best is to try it..... if it dosen't work take it back to where you bought.... could be worth a shot...

I know it's not what u want to hear but ...

Anywho....hope this helps...

yes it is correct...you need an separate account for each cable modem, it's always been that way. you will also have to have RG6 cabling installed from the demarc into the home for the 2nd cable modem, that will cost extra about $120
