Yes you can but you need a crossover cable, then put ip on each computer and you should be good to go. Just connect your two computers together directly.

No, standard ethernet cable will not work by just plugging two computers together since you will also need a hub/ switch between them. If you want to connect the two computers directly you'll need to ask for a "crossover"cable. I don't know what you're trying to do, but my personal recomendation is to invest in two regular eithernet cables and a cheap hub/switch. A cheap switch/hub can be found for $10-20. Then you'll need to configure both machines for networking, which goes beyond the scope of this answer. You'll need to read up on how to do that since it'll be slightly different for each computer's operating system and you didn't tell us what you're running. You can also buy two USB wireless networking adaptors and set up a wireless network. USB Wireless nics can be had for about $10 each and you dont have to bother with cabling. You'll still need to configure both for networking. If you're unfamiliar with this, find a friend who can help you out. It'll save a bunch of hair pulling if you've never done it before.

You sure can. You'd use what is known as a "crossover cable". There is no need for a switch, hub or router. You just connect the two computers together using that cable. Crossover cables (do a google search for how to make one) can be purchased for short money at any reputable computer store.

Yes you can. When I started to network I had a desktop and laptop. I wanted to connect them together, I just used a regular catagory 5 network cable and plugged it in the Ethernet plug on each PC.

Yes, My suggestion is to get a USB to USB cable and connect the two. In my opinion it is the easiest, however there is software or instructions with it becuase the first time you do it it may be a little complicated.

Yes, but first you have to figure out which one the the boy computer and which one is the girl computer. Once you have figured that out you will know where to plug the plugs. It will not work if they are both boy computers or both girl computers because they will not have the right plugs to plug together.
