Why is my WIFI internet connection so slow? I have ATT Yahoo DSL with speed 1.5mbs,I couldve always downloaded things at 160kilobytes/s.But now it is only like 12 kilobytes/s.Internet is like more than 10 times as low. I have Belking 54G router and Hawking HWP54G wireless card. What happened was I download latest drivers for my card ,specificaly Rev R and my connection improved from low to very good and the speed is almost constant 54mbps which seems good, and it stopped disconnecting for no reason. But speed in reality is very very slow.Could this new driver cause the problem, but why?Everything improved but the speed. Or is it mabe because I changed channel on router from 11 to 2?How can I fix this? What is wrong?I appreacite any help?

If your card is connected at 54MBps i'd say that its OK and that the problem could be on the DSL side things. I've had similar things happen and on one occasion my modem had overheated and the second time it was a problem with my ISP, so maybe look down that track first.

If you live in an apartment, then you would want to make sure that your wireless Internet has a password protect on it. Other wise, all of your neighbors will take advantage of the free wifi that you are broadcasting. If that is not the case, try to roll back the driver for your card to the original drivers. Sometimes the new drivers have glitches in them.

Lots of variables. Try moving your laptop right next to your router and see if that helps. Otherwise, change the router for a new one, and see if that helps. Next you can change the wireless card and see if that helps...see where I am going? You do process of elimination and in 99% of the cases it is one of those things...

Also keep in mind that a wireless connection will be much slower than a wired connection in all cases.

The bottleneck with internet downloads is invariably the internet connection. If your ISP is cable - virgin media etc and to an extent ADSL BT etc your access bandwidth is often shared with other connections in your neighbourhood. In my experience netgear stuff is good... Linksys (being a part of cisco) is the best... Belkin wireless stuff I have found fairly mediocore.

Yes, it could be because of your channel change. Wireless is free for anyone to use and anybody could be using the same channel and clobbering you. Try a different channel.

Hello-

You could try using a program like Network Magic to diagnose and troubleshoot your network. They offer a free trial and it lets you see your whole network and where the trouble spots are.
