Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It is a Linksis Wireless-B 2.4 GHz router. What baffles me is that my wife's laptop always picks up the signal from the router, but my laptop only picks it up intermittently. And furthermore, my laptop also picks up signals from about 3 or four other wireless routers in the neighborhood.

Check the channels of all the local networks you can see. Go into the configuration page as in your manual and change you channel away from any of these. The location you are working from, any obstructions between you and the router, and the type of network card on your machine will affect reception. Also, the B type routers are quite out-dated now, your card may not have good retro support for B. You can also try moving the router location to clear walls and electrical equipment.
