Is there any way i can connect to a distant computer( I mean a wireless network connection) and be able to transfer data from my system to theirs and vice-versa. Is Connecting to an unknown server also possible?

I've got an old SpeedStream modem, a not-so-new Linksys wireless router, one PC running XP, and one laptop running XP Pro. Lately, I've noticed I am loosing my DSL connection often. I contacted AT&T (ISP) and they said it was likely my modem going out. HOWEVER, if I take the router out of the mix, and connect to the SBCIS network, like I did when I first got my DSL 5 yrs ago, I have no problems - - except that I no longer have a home network! Is it a configuration problem, could Linksys be dropping me or could my modem really be that wishy-washy with the router connected?

I consider myself a very BASIC level of this networking stuff...

THANKS!

I am also interested in what are the common problems/issues when setting up a home wireless network. Is it a better idea to just use a wired router?

I have a desktop and just got a laptop. I am clueless as to how to hook these two up (the desktop is already hooked up and running) and be able to use the internet on both of them at the same time. Any help that you have would be great and ten points is offered if anyone can give me detailed directions on how to do this. I have cable internet, do I still need some card and a router?

I have a computer that always has very low connection, and often can't find the signal at all and was wondering if there are any ways to fix this problem.

I am wondering if the computer that has the hookup to the cable and has the router to which all the other computers are connected wirelessly ALSO has to have a wireless adapter or card, whether internal or USB. Currently, the desktop that I'm thinking of only has an ethernet card.

I have a private LAN, hooked to a Netgear router and a cable modem... and now I need to add a limited "public" access, but I want to very tightly firewall the two, to keep my private network secure.
Can I run another router, in "parallel" perhaps, and give it another IP range, so that it is in a completley different net?
How would I go about setting that up, if it's possible?

Any tips would be appreciated...

Hello. The room in my new place have CAT5 ports, but I don't know what I can with it (get DSL, Cable Internet, etc.). All the room CAT5 cables go to a patch panel and are hardwired onto a motherboard-type platform. In addition, a CAT5 wire from the outside is hardwired to this board as well. Thus, I can't connect any ethernet-type device to it (e.g. routers, cable modem, etc.). So, it seems a CAT5 connection from the outside is splitting/feeding to all the rooms.

Thus, what is "network" used for?

Thanks - Ron R

How to connect PC with PDA using wi-fi without using wireless router? is router necessary for Wi-Fi connection. I hope, wireless adapter on both would be sufficient. If anyone could provide step by step instruction on this, that would be helpful.
