as was already said, booster antennas can help they are not that spendy either. You might want to consider your building certain walls can hinder signal, particularly ifyou have metal studs or very thick walls. I get a signal about 125-150 feet. Have never tried further than that, but my signal is always 100% of my connection (hardwire) speed.
First things being first, try your wireless connection directly next to the router you should have a strong connection 100%. If not your wireless card, router, or configuration of something is off...
Good Luck

Move the router antennas to favor you work location and look around look to avoid things shielding the signal (steel beams and air ducts).
Unless you are far away from the router the Boosters are a last resort. Can you "see" other wireless networks active in your region? If so you are in a battle to find your router in that sea of signals...

Try moving the router to a different location. Routers' signal sometimes are weaker near microwaves, walls, cordless phones, or anything that can obstruct the view. Also, if it is possible, try pointing the antenna toward the computer. That will increase signal strength.

Move the router closer to the computer
Move the computer closer to the router
Move the antenna for the compute or router to a higher position in the room
Change the channel that you're using on your Wireless G to one not being used by your neighbors.
Good Luck

Okay...
You can get a repeater...
you can buy a third party, directional antenna...
You can locate the router CLOSER to the LAPTOP or vice versa.
(I pre-wired my laundry room with 5 jacks so I could run the router there and be close to the center of the house.
You can also get the newer equipment... the newer routers and integrated NICs are much more efficient.
Finally you can put a wired ACCESS POINT in the vicinity.

convinced, it truly is what routers are for. and there is no "dialing" mandatory, even with what different responders have reported. The router will contain classes and software that can help you placed it up.
