Hello. The room in my new place have CAT5 ports, but I don't know what I can with it (get DSL, Cable Internet, etc.). All the room CAT5 cables go to a patch panel and are hardwired onto a motherboard-type platform. In addition, a CAT5 wire from the outside is hardwired to this board as well. Thus, I can't connect any ethernet-type device to it (e.g. routers, cable modem, etc.). So, it seems a CAT5 connection from the outside is splitting/feeding to all the rooms.

Thus, what is "network" used for?

Thanks - Ron R

Sounds like a pretty new house. If its a group of n ew townhouses the most likely you get your internet through there. You may be paying some money for in in your home owners assoc fee. Check with them and see if thats the case. Otherwise most likely that there is a main connection from outside networks (cable modem and sorts) Update question with findings.

Hi there,

Your Ethernet is a Cat5 connection. All you need is a Cat5 cable to connect from the wall outlet to your computer.

You will still need internet service(which may, probably will be, available already at the motherboard from the outside)

I would check with my neighbors first, this will enable you to:

meet your neighbors
find out the quality of the internet service(I have Cat5 DSL and have learned the customer support is just about worthless, and for the first two weeks I got dropped at least once every day. Unfortunately, I have no alternatives.
find out what your neighbors have for TV, internet, phone
Cat5 simply transmits a signal. Technically, it could be any one of several signals.

Take something over(dessert, fresh bread, etc) and say "Hi I'm_________. We just moved in next door and I'll trade you this _______ for some of your genius. We've got a Cat5 cable? What's it used for, and who provides your TV, phone, and internet? BTW this is a good time to hope they're not Jewish or diabetic. and the main thing!!!!!

have fun

Same as any other network -- Internet access. You should ask the landlord who the ISP is and how you sign up for service (it will probably cost you about the same as DSL).

I've seen apartment complexes wired that way. The whole place is one big LAN; when you connect to the network, the DHCP server issues you a private IP address.

As to routers, you can definitely plug them in; just plug the Internet cable straight into the wall, rather than into a cable or DSL modem.

Looks like that the 'motherboard type platform' that you are talking about is a switch - used to split the signals. If you plug your cable internet connection into this switch, it will be able to relay internet signals to all those cat5 connections in different rooms. ie you will have internet ready rooms.

well guess it was to be internet network for gaming etc sharing files. etc.. chances are it could be a break or fault in 1 of the cables or on motherboard connection
u would need to get a curcuit tester to find out where the break is

Open your mouth and ask the person who owns the rental place or owned the house before you.
