I have a desktop and just got a laptop. I am clueless as to how to hook these two up (the desktop is already hooked up and running) and be able to use the internet on both of them at the same time. Any help that you have would be great and ten points is offered if anyone can give me detailed directions on how to do this. I have cable internet, do I still need some card and a router?

[I have cable with high speed]
I recently received a laptop. Took the big fat wire out of the back of my regular computer (the end looks like a telephone connection) and plugged it into the side of the laptop. Then I called my ISP and asked for advice on how to connect to the Internet with the laptop using the same ISP (no extra charge for being connected to one or the other).....anyway they talked me through the whole deal. Great!
This way you can at least run one or the other by plugging in that fat wire to the lap top and then when you want to use the desktop...plug it into the back of your reg. computer.
Sorry, don't know how to run both. Except by wireless reuter thing. I don't have that yet...but hopefully will soon.

What is the laptop that you have purchased? If it is a centrino it is wireless enabled and in that case you would need a wireless access point router to get the Internet remotely. The same can help you access the desktop as well from your lap top. Pls note that when you purchase the router purchase one with a four port or more switch option in it so that the desktop can be connected to it.

Go buy a linksys router or a netgear router.

Linksys: 50$

Netgear: Sometimes 30$ sometimes 45$

Either will do.

Make sure you get the Wireless gear. It will say on the box, most likely have antennas on it.

The cd will come in the box, its fairly simple after that.

If you have cable or dsl its mainly easier....

Hook the cable in the router, another wire from port 1 into the back of you computer....then begin answering simple questions...

You must have a wifi capable laptop to even get it otherwise you'll have to spend another 50$ just to get the card to slip in the side of your laptop or you'll have to get the USB device. =)

The specifics on if you have a wireless modem built into your laptop depends on if you have a Mac or PC, also how to set-up, detect hot spots etc.
Look in My Network places or in your control panel if a PC.
If a Mac running Tiger, click on top right area on somthing that looks like this: <.....>, also shows you network info on your machine.

to be able to answer that question, please provide the make/model number of your modem, some modems are routers as well, but would need more information to advise you

just quote any details you can find on the router, and post them again, i will monitor this for the next few minutes to see if you add them, otherwise hope you find out

A modem is not a router.
