The "best" wire would be CAT6 ethernet cable, which supports up to 1Gb transfer rates. But, if your network cards are only 10/100, it won't do you much good to have that good a cable. Cat5e would be more than sufficient. To link the two directly, you'll need it to be a "crossover" cable, rather than a "patch" cable.
Link the two together by the crossover cable, set up a home network (workgroup), share the files on the old computer (share the entire hard drive if you wish), then copy the data you want to the new laptop.

If both have USB ports use a thumbdrive. 1gb for 17$. and u can use it for other things after you complete transferring your files. www.newegg.com or www.buy.com
