Maintenance & Repairs - January 2007

I was thinking about using Mobil 1 Synthetic Diesel Oil and Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my 1994 Chevrolet K3500 Turbo Diesel Truck. What are your opinions on synthetics? How much better are they than conventional fluids? Can they really mean the difference between towing just fine and having your transmission go out? Has anyone had any bad experiances with synthetics in their truck? Any reviews on these items (particularly Mobil 1 products) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

While getting my annual inspection last year my O2 Sensors failed the emissions tests and needing replacing. Same thing has happened again this year too! Is this common for O2 Sensors to go out that often? At over $300 to replace it's rather frustrating and costly.

Does anyone have removal instructions for the radiator?

Must you remove the headlights and/or bumper to remove the grille to gain access? Bumper or bumper cover?

Over the last 2 months, my milage per tank of gas has dropped quite a bit. I never got much in the first place (1994 Mazda MPV with a V6), like 450-500 to a tank. But now I'm barely able to get 330 before I have to fill up again. I haven't had a tune up in a while which may be one reason but might be some other reasons?

I've noticed recently (when I installed a new heater switch) that sometimes the heater will not work. I have to pop the hood and tap on the heater fan housing (on the passenger side against the firewall). usually it starts right up. recently I installed a new sony stereo head unit. I waited to install the dash kit and when i was using the unit without the dash kit the heater was working as before. Now I installed the dash kit, and the heater still works exactly as before but it cuts off in about 5-10 seconds. I can tap the housing and it comes back on but, but it still cuts back off in about 10 seconds. is it a ground or something...and what do I do to fix it? PLEASE HELP! I need my heater cuz i currently have a broken window!!! IT'S WINTER!!!!!!

I have a problem with my 93 topaz. The windows will nto roll up or down. It started with the back windows first, but you could roll them back up from that particular switch, but not from the drivers master. Then all of a sudden all the windows went out. I have replaced the switch in the drivers door. I have replaced the fuse. I can't find a short anywhere in the line to the switch. Any other suggestions, other than take it to a mechanic?

sometimes my escort starts fine and then when i turn the key nothing the whole car is dead nothing at works,is it the keys the imobiliser?this happened taday was driving all day then stoped at a shop got back in and nothing all dead!!!!So i fiddled under the bonet with the starter motor wire a we bit and it came back to life .when i say it was dead it was totaly dead the clock was of the hazards every thing any ideas.sometimes the back wiper doesnt come on and the rear heater and fog light switches light up but are not on

engine soon light has come on. It's a 2003 Saturn Vue & just turned over 60k miles. The manual states that if this light is on constant it could be something that needs serviced or it's an emmissions problem. Gas cap is on tight although I did just fill up with gas 2 days ago & it said it could be a result of cheap gas that thislight comes on although I don't notice that it's running bad. It said it could turn off automatically if it's one of these things but so far driving today that hasn't happened. Any suggestions?

Hi when i turn corners with full lock there is an odd noise...kind of a rubbing noise.I looked in my haynes manual and sounds like it could be a worn cv joint.any clues??does this sound right.if so are they hard to fix and is it cheap?many thanks

Hi i have a 93 Ford Fiesta 1.1 LX 5 door.In the front passenger foot well there was quite a damp mat. Lifted up the matts to see the insulation(???not sure what its called) was sodden with water.So pulled all of this out.Cannot see no holes no nothing that would suggest water was getting in from.Took off some of the trim to look/feel for damp but this was dry.The door seals feel fine.So i left it came back the next day and there was a little bit of water there again!!!it doesnot smell of chemicals some presuming its just water.I do have a leaking screen wash reservoir but as the water inside the car does not smell of this I can rule this out??im in need of much help.anything&I would be extremely grateful

My boyfriend's car has been causing problems for the last few weeks. The engine continually switches from hot to cold rapidly when he drives it. He also doesn't get any heat when the engine is hot and when it cools down his heat kicks back on. He has replaced the water pump and the temperature gauge and the problem still persists. He isn't leaking any fluids that he can tell and there is not anti-freeze leaking into his oil, so he doesn't think it could be a hole in the seal. He's tried to get all the air out of the engine by taking off the radiator cap and running the car and turning on the air conditioner, could there possibly be air still in there? Can anyone help us? We'd greatly appreciate any ideas. Thank you!
