Could be, to check it out, if its not leaking water which would be an obvious sign, then take the cap off the radiator with the engine cold, start the vehicle and let it warm to operating temp. , then look inside of the radiator if you see water circulating then chances are the water pump is not your problem.

It could be the water pump. Most of the time when a water pump goes bad,the "weep hole" under the water pump will start leaking. There is another way to check the pump.Do this when the car is NOT running---find the pulley on the front of the water pump,if you can manually move this pulley up and down by hand even just a little bit, then your water pump is going bad.First check all the easier stuff first like the idler pulley. They are notorious for the bearings going out and making a whining noise. If your belt itself is worn or just loose,it too will make a whining noise. It could be lots of things but i hope these ideas point you in the right direction.

Yes it could be, but I doubt it. When a water pump goes bad its usually gives a sound like a can of marble being shaken. The whining could be a belt OR sometimes an alternator will make a whining noise.........

Yes, but it is more likely that the whining noise is the belt tensioner and not the water pump.

Any belt driven item can make a whining noise when the bearings go south.

The bearing have gone out...or your fan belts are loose if the noise is only when you step on the gas.
