Maintenance & Repairs - December 2006

Since I've gotten answers that indicate I should have my engine rebuilt or replaced rather than repairing a blown head gasket on a Dodge Caravan with 150,000 miles, can anyone give me an idea what that's going to cost, so I'm prepared when I talk to the dealer tomorrow.

I keep my car outside so when it snows here (it does pretty bad) It is quite the mission to clear my car off. I usually just start my car a half hour before i have to leave, but is there any other advice?

I have already tried the whole beachtowel on my window thing...doesnt work.

Any tips or priducts that work?

What is the best compound for a street/strip 351c engine. The two ends are rubber, but I was wondering if a bead of RVT or just plain Fel-Pro gaskets would be best.

I charged the battery. Car starts but it only stays on for a few minutes. The battery is one month old. I also had the alternator replaced with the battery. the alternator is used. I got it from a junk yard. What could be the problem?

the lights come on but the gauges don't work. How do I fix this? do I need a new board? where can I find a replacement one? the break lights don't come on when I press the pedal, is this related? where can I get power steering pump brackets and the mechanism for the door handle?

whilst driving tonight, I hit a kerb (the side of the road) I glanced off it more than head on.....At first the car seemed to drive ok however later the steering juddered badly above 45 miles per hour....I can't see anything to the naked eye, however Im not sure what I am looking at... I drove the car over 25 miles home and it was ok when I went below 45mph..... I plan to take it to tyre wheel aligner tomorrow rather than garage, simply because Im not sure of any garages around here.

i saw in a movie online of an F1 engine on a dyno and the manifolds were glowing orange from the 800degree F of exhaust and when the throttle was suddenly dropped off, a little bit of flames came out the exhaust tips. ive seen this same effect on most racing video games also.

can i tune my car to get this effect? what upgrades will be neccessary for it? also, how can i increase my engine RPMs? if my limiter is set at 6kRPMs, how can i increase it to 7000 without any damage?

im only 17 and dont have a car yet, but plan to buy an older 4cyl and trick it out. are there general tuning parameters for getting the afterburn?

any tips will be appreciated

I have a 2004 F150 truck. Every once in a while I get in, and I have a dead battery. The battery seems good and the gauge always shows that it's charging - and it starts up with a jump. When I'm having the dead battery problem I noticed a ticking sound in the back after I turn the truck off. If this is my fuel punp, why does it not turn off after I turn the truck off?

please help Ihave a 1997 f-150 4.2L engine
I have asked several times
I removed harmonic balancer, a/c p/s alternator etc out of way I put #1 cyl at tdc before removing harmonic balancer then removed cam position sensor crank sensor knock sensor the engine did turn however when i pulled harmonic ballancer no longer at tdc on #1 cyl the timing cover seems to be stuck on left side facing front of eng. this is all so the side coolant was leaking from. I all so removed front oil pan screws one on each side. there are noscrews left holding it on. I used PB Blaster to free up any rusted guides it just will not come off. please help please

If Jiffy L--- filled my expansion tank with coolant all the way to the top without leaving room for expansion when the car heats up, can that cause a blown head gasket? If so, any suggestions on how I can prove they were responsible?

The girlfriend is getting upset, her shoes that were in her boot have gone mouldy, when i lifted the boot liner it was condensated , the fiesta is 5 years old but is low milage and there is no rust. Has anybody else had this and do you cure and prevent it?

I need to rebuild a Chevy 350 that I have. I would like to import all the original parts for it but dont want to end up buying the wrong ones. I being a novice am afraid of doing just that. Please tell me weather there is a differenence between 350's and if there is how can I tell one apart from another?

I posted a Q last night, but I have more info today! I have a 1998 Ford Explorer- 2 WD, V6 4.0 liter engine-keyless entry (they asked all that at the parts store). After some diagnostics, we believe the serpentine belt tensioner needs to be replaced but I can not find any info online as to whether this is a DIY type job. Can anyone help me (and my poor husband) on this? Is this an easy repair job?

Here was my original Q:

My car is making a high pitched whiny kinda squealing noise! When I left home, it
started this high pitched squeal....then stopped...drove about 60 miles...It sat for about two hours in a parking lot. On the way home, it started that noise
and never stopped...Just as I was turning into the subdivision, my radio quit and
my lights went real dim on my dash...the ABS light came on...pulled in the drive...
turned it off and waited a second, tried to turn it back on and it just clicked...dead
battery...
