6mm on front brake pad and 8mm on rear. I hear that it still may be a while before they would need replacement I want to know just how LONG as in months or years? thanks

There is no answer to this question.

Brakes don't wear out over X amount of distance, they wear out from use. Every driver is different. Some use the brakes more frequently than others, some brake harder, some brake longer, some make a lot of stops on their daily commute, ohters don't, etc. etc... Quite litterally, if you took 2 people and put them in identical cars one might get 80,000 miles out of a set of brakes and the other might get 20,000 miles.

Normal wear ratio on Barake pads is 70% Front and 30% Rear this means that the 8mm on the rear will last much longer than the 6mm on the front. Since you do not give any clues as to how many miles you do p.a. I would suggest you drive for a month and check again.
N.B. the Grand Cherokee should have pad wear indicators - if this is the case them a light will come on the dashboard to warn you. Check by 'phoning the local dealer who should be able to tell you.
