There are some ways that it could hurt your battery. If you connect the cables wrong (remember Red goes to Positive (+) and Black goes to Negative (-)). If the boosted battery is shortted out it could harm your battery. In both these cases you will see lots of sparks when you hook the cables up so just disconnect them. A little sparking is OK. However boosting for a long time can harm your alternator if the engine is hard to start.

No, If it is done properly. I think it is better to not start the car giving the jump, cause the electrical system in the car giving the jump might not be compatible to the car getting the jump, thus causing damage to either car.
Put the hot cable(+) side on first, then the ground (-) next.

no but make sure that your engine is running faster than tick over otherwise it will flatten your battery if the other car doesnt start straight away.

well, depending what kind of car you have, you can mess up the alternator, & short out you cars computer, on new cars i personally would advise against giving jumps, people use to do it on older cars.

Generally speaking,if the "Polarity" is correct, no.
If you don't know what this means, don't try it.

I've done many of these but still had one battery blow out.
