I use a 5mil drop cloth that I get from the Depot or Lowes and I cut it to custom fit my windshield.
It tucks in the front doors preventing the doors freezing stuck I then get two plastic shower caps and cover the mirrors.
I turn off the ignition so the wipers are midstroke, that way when I get off work or in the morning I just come out open the passenger door pull off the snow and the showe cap and I am done in two minutes.
I have a pickup so I don't worry about the rear window but you can custom cut one for the rear in the same way.
10 bucks and a little time.

We get a lot of snow, especially lake effect, where I live. I keep my car in a car port, but always travel with a brush that has a scraper on the end. It's invaluable to me and I usually have a spare at home. You can usually find them at a gas station or discount store for about $5 or so. I've used a broom, but with heavy snow, the broom gets bogged down with the snow weight. Scrapers are good for ice, but alone are a real mess if there's a lot of snow. Try the combo-it's worked for me for years!
On very cold mornings I warm up my car for about 10 minutes so my windshield will defrost. It also helps with the snow too! Warming up your car for 30 minutes will use a lot of gas and I'm not sure if it's good for the engine to be idling that long without being driven.
I've never used a beach towel so I can only imagine how frustrated you must be!!

Do you want to CLEAR it of, or keep it off. I have an SUV that I have to park outside.
To clear: here is what I've been doing for years: I get a push broom, flop it up on top half way across the roof, and push. Half the snow falls to the other side. This keeps the snow off me. I do the same to the other side, then the windshield , hood, and doors. One foot of snow, 2-3 minutes, max, and I have a bad back.

go to your local auto parts store they have a cover that goes on the outside of the windshield . so when it snows you pull it off and the windshield is clear.
