Maintenance & Repairs - September 2006

If a aluminum cylinder head is cracked between the "intake" and "exhaust" valves, what is the best method of repairing it? Do you tig weld it or drill and plug the crack? Or, is there something else that I don't know of? Please explain which method is better and why? Thanks.

I've got a 2000 Mazda Miata that I parked under a tree. Now it has Sap spots all over the Body and the convertible top. I've got rid of the sap from the body but the top still has sap stains on it. I dont want to use any solvents that could change the beige color of the top. Any of you got any suggestions.

My 97' ford contour door doesn't close it locks, but it's not closed all the way.I have to bump it with my hip to make it close when i get out. It pops open on the expressway while driving.(Funny right)
Or sometime it will close with no problem.What should I do?

I have a 98 eclipse and I remove the thermostast cuz the car used to over heat well it just happend to be a lick for the antifreeze andnow the level is fine and the tempetature is fine too. But I can hear the water boiling

Some people say it's the fuel pump. How can I know for sure. The car will crank but not catch. There's no fuel coming through the pipeline under the hood.

I'm having a problem with a car that I bought from Ebay (as I asked in the previous two questions). The seller described the engine and electricals *excellent* and have *no problem*. When I received the car, the engine light was one. I contacted the seller (actually, a dealer) said that they changed O2 sensor. Also, a gas cap was missing. I bought it and waited to see if it goes off, but it didn't. I took it to Honda dealership and it needs a new exhaust system including a catalytic converter replacement, all of which could run up to $1,700! Can this be considered a *fraudulent* description of the item and falls under Ebay's fraud protection?

A few days ago the car attempted to start normally, then it just didnt do anything. No horn. No lights. The battery is full - a jump does nothing. When i take the key out of the ignition, the gauges flicker around for a few seconds. When trying to start the car, it doesnt click or even try to start. Any suggestions????

and the air conditioner does basically the opposite. what could be causing this? and would a 'cooling system flush' cure it? Thanks....

I am having trouble getting paint to stick to bare metal when a patch of bad paint has been sanded smooth to expose the steel - even though I clean carefully and apply primer. Is there a 'primer for the primer'?

I 've already tried checking every fuse in the box and I can't seem to find where the relay flasher/blinker is, both underneath the dashboard and under the hood. Is there a special location for this flasher/blinker for this particular model of vehicle?

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5S with 26k on it and got it brand new. I've been putting in synthetic oil (Mobil 1 5W-30) since my first oil change. I'm thinking about selling the car and need to know if have to tell the next owner if they have to put synthetic oil in.

my car has been sitting in the drive for weeks now without being used. I am going to try and jumpstart it because i am driving it to an auction to sell it but the auction place is quite a bit away like maybe 40 min to 1 hr drive away. is it likely to break down because it has been just sitting there? what kind of things happen to a car when it is not used for a while? :)

this may have happenend to me. my friend who put the spare on the day before with a hand held wrench said he definitely would have noticed, as it is impossible to screw the nut on by hand, if it is stripped.

I drove my BMW through flood waters this morning (no choice on my way to work) it stalled out in the middle of a puddle once, I was able to start it and then it happened again. I made it to work but I could smell smoke coming from my engine. Can you tell me what the problem may be?

There are some small hoses on the passenger side. I've removed the clips but they still don't want to come apart. I don't want to force it too much for fear of damaging something. I've got to get it out to replace my harmonic balancer. The Haynes manual I purchased isn't much help.
