I work at a car dealer where I started as the evening receptionist making $7.50 an hour. I was promoted after 6 months (after giving my 2 weeks notice*) to daytime receptionist and compensated with a raise ($10.50). After a full year I was moved into our accounting office and was made the accounts receivable and payable clerk and my comptroller gave me a $0.50 raise. I'm also a backup when needed for our receptionists whenever one quits, needs a day off etc. I train any new receptionist we have to hire and I've also learned how to do more tasks in our accounting office (dealer trades, putting contracts together for deals, warranty credit postings etc.). I've been here for a little over two years and I'm still finding it hard to get by with the money I make. I want to ask for a raise but I'm not sure if I'm in the position to. I've researched what people are making on average at my position and its more than my current rate. Should I wait to ask for a raise or should I just go for it?

My husband received an e-mail from the general manager asking him to stop by his office before a meeting this morning. The general manager wanted my husband (a supervisor, but under the manager) to supervise the manager while he packed his personal belongings. I thought this was completely unprofessional. I feel the general manager or someone in a similar position as the manager should have done this. What do you do in a situation like this? I felt bad for my husband having to do this because the manager did confide in him a lot since they are both prior military.

I am about to give in notice to my employers. I don't have another job lined up or anything, I just want to leave. I want to say to them that I'll work out the month but I'm only required to give a weeks notice. Can they demand I leave after the week? Please let me know what you think.

I'm setting up job interviews for a company, and I scheduled an interview for a friend today because she asked me for one. She didn't show up, so it's going to go on my record that my friend blew off the interview. Why do people do this? Only about 25% are coming to the interviews that I set up. Why do people not show up to interviews?

I'm a receptionist and a client keeps calling in and saying creepy things to me like,
I know where you live.
I Love You.
I have pictures of you.
I'm going to come to your house with glass cutters and cut a hole in your window and sing to you.
He's also invited me to come to his house & boat & vacations with him.
I never go along with these creepy things he says. Several times I've told him "That's Weird" or "Your Creepy". What can I do or say to stop this guy from saying creepy things to me?

He's a client so I can't just hang up on him or block the calls. And he lives in another state. So I'd like to think he won't come here to stalk me.

I don't want to quit, I'd like to negotiate a layoff so when I interview again neither party looks bad. I'm really unhappy here and there's no opp for a raise/benefits/promotion. It's a dead-end job w/ a boss that hates all her former employees. I fear what she'll say about me if I quit, even if I give notice. She talks about all the ppl that ever worked for her as if they were all idiots. It's her company so no, I can't go over her head. There's her, 3 employees, and 4 temps. We all feel she's inconsiderate of our needs as human beings.

To let you know how she is: I told her the other employees & I needed health & dental insurance & she said, "Dental? My teeth are fine!"

Does this mean I should look for employment someplace else? I dont know how do deal with this because my manager is in on this, I have no one to turn to for help. Any one I try to befriend, ends up making fun of me or ignoring me. They say things about me that are not true, they sabotage my passwords on my computer, and find ways to generally make my life difficult at work.
Is this just the way the workplace is or am I missing something? I am finding ways to cope, but I dont to "cope". I just want to be left alone to do my job. And get along with my co-workers. I believe I act in a professional manner,( no gossiping, proper apperance,e.t.c.) so this type of treatment is a mystery to me.

My typing speed is approximately 55wpm, data entry is around 6,000 kph and I know MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook quite well. I have also done quite a bit of mail room work in the past. I've posted my resume on Yahoo! HotJobs, Careerbuilder, Monster, etc., replied to postings online, registered with staffing firms. I've always gone months between jobs and had to explain gaps in employment. I am about to take a night course to learn MS Powerpoint. Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can get a full-time job w/benefits?

I am a receptionist/office assistant at this company. I was walking to the kitchen and a guy came in to meet with my boss. Its a small office and there are 6 other people around. The guy walked in and I was walking down the hallway by the door and I said Hello and continued walking. My boss comes behind me in the kitchen and starts yelling at me for not greeting him professionally and not offering coffee/water. I know I should have done this but I kinda spaced it, almost thinking someone else would be able to help him and the fact that my boss saw him coming, I almost assumed he would come out to greet him as well. Pretty much, I screwed up, but how do I deal with this and what should I do? I am so embarassed I want to run out of the building! I never have been yelled at at work...Advice?

I am working a 40 hour week, but there is only about 20+ hours of work to do while I am here. Anything I can do that will pass the time? My boss wants me here to answer the phones, customers, etc. so they are OK with me doing whatever I can to pass the time while on the clock.

Please no joking answers either. Right now, I read, do crossword puzzles, lurk on YA and surf the internet, and clean my office. But these are getting old and boring. I am not a very crafty person so needlepoint and such doesnt interest me.

Thanks!

Okay here is the company lineup...two brothers who own the place and two office workers...me - been here 4 years and another girl - been here 12 years. We spend all day in an office alone together. She is constantly calling me stupid and yelling at me in completely unprofessional ways. I addressed this with my boss once already and it stopped temporarily but now she is doing it again. Today she belittled me to where I was almost in tears. How do I again bring this up to my boss without it sounding like we are just two females having a cat fight?
