My position has vastly changed over the past 10 years with added responsibilities and technology knowledge needed to carry out the position. How do I write a letter to HR requesting a position title change and salary upgrade? What things should I include in the letter to justify this? My Job Description was written in the 80's.

Do you report directly to HR, or do you have another boss that you have worked directly for?

If you worked for someone other than HR, enlist their help. Create a small presentation of your original job description and then show what you do know. Try to get your boss on your side and then both of you go to HR/upper management.

If no other boss, then just gear the presentation toward HR. This is something you want to give in person, not in a written only format. You are proving your value and worth to the company, be worthy of what you are asking.

Good luck

Initially you revise your Job Description by citing all the added responsibilities and skills acquired during your 10 years. Include special projects and delegated tasks assigned to you. If you have periodic performance reviews or performance appraisal - it would also be helpful to mention your previous ratings or how you excel in your current post. Include compliments or good reviews from your immediate superior to justify how well you manage your current post.

In writing a letter to HR:
1. Make sure you know your job level or how you are positioned in the organizational chart. Who are you reporting to? What level are your peers or how are your peers positioned in the organizational chart.

2. Mention how committed and motivated you are in your job BUT also mention that you are aspiring for some recognition in the form of career growth/movement.

3. Request for a job evaluation after submitting your revised job description.

Job evaluation will determine if the added responsibilities would merit a position change. HR would also evaluate your current job level to the rest of the organization. If after the JE, and they are able to validate your request, then a salary adjustment will be mandatory for HR to give.

Good luck!

Write a new job description based on your current duties. Make a comparison chart with other higher paid/rated positions in your company and positions in other similar industries. Send your old and new descriptions along with the industry comparisons to HR with a cover letter requesting a salary and position upgrade. Be sure to state the salary and title you believe are suitable.

Another thing to add to what the other posters said, do some research in your area for similar positions. Find out what others who do the same type of work are paid. Include that research in your letter.
