I am about to give in notice to my employers. I don't have another job lined up or anything, I just want to leave. I want to say to them that I'll work out the month but I'm only required to give a weeks notice. Can they demand I leave after the week? Please let me know what you think.

Technically, yes, they can encourage you to leave after one week if that is their policy. Especially if they know you have no other job lined up- they might do it just for spite. However, it could be of interest to them if you say you want to stay on to help them hire and train a replacement for you. Then they will see your motives as purely altruistic. Good luck!

They can lay you off whenever they want to. You're the one who is obligated to give notice, not them. What are you going to do for income if you don't have another job lined up? I'm in the same boat kid. I want to leave but I'm waiting for a better opportunity to come along. I use my lunch break to submit my resume to job hiring websites. Give two weeks notice. If they need you, say that you'll stay the rest of the month.

Yes, they can.

I put in a month's notice once - big mistake. 2 weeks later, they told me that I could stop coming in. So, I received 2 weeks less pay than I had expected and also my benefits cut off 2 weeks earlier than I anticipated. :(

If you're an at-will employee, they can let you go pretty much any time for almost any reason.

They can accept your resignation the moment you turn it in. However, if you are providing ample notice and they still demand you leave immediately, you can file for unemployment and will usualy get it for the time period of the notice you offered.

It really depends on your companies policy. Just wait three weeks, put in your letter, work another week, there's your month. Dang I love saving the world!

they can ask you to leave any time they want but if you give a notice to leave and they will have to lay you off and you can collect unemployment.... Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania

Yes they can. well...now that I rethink it, I know they can in Washington but it IS diff in diff states. Here you can be fired without cause or quit without cause. Unless you have a contract of course.
