The most important question is WHO told you to get a job as a secretary? And why did they tell you to do so?
What are YOU interested in? What other skills besides typing do you have? What is your ideal type of position and what education/training do you have behind you, or are you willing to get.
Now I will answer the question posed. Volunteering is a good start. Volunteer at a local organization or small business. Take secretarial classes at the local community college. Try getting a job as a Receptionist first and building up to Secretary. Two sites you should check out are IAAP- http://www.iaap-hq.org and Association of Executive & Administrative Professionals- https://www.theaeap.com for more information on the professions. Also look at http://us.deskdemon.com/pages/us/indexus and http://www.asaporg.com/
Here is an article that may also help you. http://www.jobjournal.com/article_full_text.asp?artid=1686
Last, start with the temp agencies. They will provide testing before they consider you. And at this point, if you have no experience, they can better market you to a potential employer than you can yourself.
Good luck!

I would suggest applying to the temp agencies. They will test you in different areas to find out what your skills are. Typing is a big part of secretarial work, so it's good you have that. Apparently you have experience with computers or you wouldn't be on yahoo, right? And you know how to spell and put things in alphabetical order? There you go, you have much more going for you than you thought. Phones are a big part also, most companies will tell you what you have to say when answering the phone, then just take messages or pass the call to the correct office, very simple. At enter level, clerical work is very basic, it really doesn'tstart getting too involved until you've been around for a while..so no biggy, you can do it. Be sure to dress appropriately, and keep your cool.....hope you know how to make coffee!!! LOL Good Luck, Karen

I just got a secretarial job with absolutely no experience. They were looking for someone who didn't know anything about the job so they could train me how they wanted. Since then I have found out alot of office jobs like someone well green. Alot of ppl in office administrative type work have their own way to do things and that can cause conflict in the office. I would just keep applying and maybe look into a job service place. Another idea is to take some administrative classes at your local college. they have some inexpensive ones (at least at the one near me) that are just a few weeks long and its real cheap. anyways hope you find a job!

Do you have any computer experience? If not, look into getting some training.
Another option is to look for receptionist jobs for now. All doctors, dentists, car dealerships, etc. need receptionists. Sometimes once you have mastered that job, you can move into another job within the company.
Go to an employment agency and they can help guide you into the right job. Good luck!

I suggest, you utilize temporary agencies. Why? if you type, and computer literate beyond basic usu age, you past all the test, along with the typing test, then you would most likely would be a candidate for a secretary assignment, and after temping in this capacity, you are ready to temp to perm assignments

Try reception first. Many employment agencies have openings for that. The next logical step is secretarial work or administrative.
