My boss is trying to tell me that this week-long training class is mandatory. He said that if I don't take it, I won't get my raise or gain-sharing (basically, a bonus). They're not offering it, though, on the shift I work. Problem is, I work another job and go to school - I work 55 hours a week between both jobs and am a full-time student (16 credit hours). I only sleep 5 hours a night as it is. I was told by my boss that if I couldn't come in on the shift they want me to, he'd have to call the district manager about it and "it will be bad." He actually suggested I take off work at my other job, or use my spring break week so I can come in. Problem is, I don't get "unpaid time off" at my other job...and I've had plane tickets for three weeks for my spring break, to visit some friends.
Can they legally require this? Can they really threaten (and follow through?) to not give me my yearly raise? They want it done by the end of March. This is ridiculous!

In 2010 I will be nearing age 30 and I will get out of the US Military having had almost 8 years time in service as a Military Police Officer. Currently I am pursuing my bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration, but haven't taken many of my Criminal Justice classes. I wanted to take all my core classes first and I am about finished. I always wanted to be a Cop, but lately have been reconsidering. I have a wife and a daughter. My wife doesn't really want be being a police officer and I am begining to wonder if I want to continue to work the long law enforcement hours to get a good salary.

Where can I find predictions of the "jobs in demand" will be around 2010 so I know whether or not I should stick with what I'm doing or go with something else. I want to reside around Charlotte, NC or the York County area of South Carolina.

Thanks in advance for your help. Please no stupid answers that are unrelated. I am looking for serious advice so I can raise my family honorably

I have a friend who is an over the road truck driver. Three weeks on the road and 3 days home. He has been one for only about 2 years and has a great record except he has had a few accidents. None were his fault and he has never had a ticket. He was sent to the company's simulator for evaluation and passed it easily. He was put on probation with this company, any accident his fault or not may result in termination. My question is, with this in mind, how difficult would it be for him to get a job with another company? Would these minor accidents that were not his fault have a huge impact on a prospective employers consideration of him?

My company has a rule book and has procedures to follow for laying someone off, or so I thought, If they dont go through on their procedures to fire someone, like warning, writeup, then suspension, then fired, Do I have a wrongfull termination case, my job is in Texas? Ive never been written up or suspended, but I do miss sometimes but never over their limit, plus their mostly for doctors visits.

I work for my dad…

And the other day I was speaking to my boyfriend and his mom about how expensive everything is these days then we stared talking about salaries and I mentioned “I am happy with my salary I think it is good for my age”…my boyfriends mom got up and under her breath she said “you know why you got that salary”….

Later that day I brought up what my boyfriends mom said to my boyfriend and he said “it’s because you don’t know how it feels to work for a real boss…”

I found people just assume that me working for dad is not a real job and that I will not have this job if the boss was not my dad…..

Do you think people that work for family are less intelligent, and are lucky cause if it weren’t for their family, they would not have a job like they do cause they only have this job cause someone in their family has a high position in the company ??

I feel i work really hard ....

does every company, especially big & well known ones, have to be an equal opportunity employer? i don't know if all of them are serious about it, but i see that on the employment application. is that required or something?

so what if they are not a EOE? do they get in trouble?

This is not a personal issue, I and many other ex co workers have been mistreated. I have had a ex coworker of mine quit due to the mistreatment in the place I work at.The staff and the management treat people like nothing. Like there is no appreciation for some one who works hard. I haven't even gotten a raise for being bilingual. I fell like i should give notice but the assistant manager asks for me to stay, I fell as if i am lowering my self esteem by working here

They started her off at $7.50 in 2001. She still makes the same, works 38 hours a week and continues bagging things happily. She is a hard worker, and never misses a day of work unless she is too sick to even walk. She is 54 years old. Is this justice? She feels that it would be too hard for her to find a job elsewhere that will provide her adequate hours for her to work which will pay her decent, and keep her there for a long time without change. From my point of view, she is being robbed. I am from Orange County, CA. Any ideas where they will offer her better pay plus advancement oppurtunities?.. She loves her job... I just can't get it across her mind that she is getting robbed. All suggestions will help alot! Thanks in advance!

I really need help. Like, I need suggestions or answers before tomorrow. I have a second interview tomorrow to be a preschool teachers assistant for special education students. I think I have the job already, but theres an issue- they wanted me to give them an expectant salary I will like or want to work for(yearly) or hourly im not sure. My mom says I should say im open but that wouldnt be a good idea, because if im open to any salary I believe the company will start me off with a low salary or think Im not direct. Open seems like im not sure about how much money to ask for, seems like im not certain. My credentials are I received my associates of art in 2005. I just received my Bachelors in University Studies in May of last year and I have experience student teaching and also volunteering at elementary schools for about 7 years. Im now working on my masters degree, but how much money should I suggest for the job position $20,000 or lower or higher. please give me some suggestions
