I am a secretary and three years ago my company was making people redundant and also accepting voluntary redundancy. At that time my boss resigned and my department was reorganised leaving me in effect without a job. I asked to take voluntary redundancy but the company refused and put me in a position on a lower grade and my salary has been frozen ever since. My salary has been frozen as it is at the top of the scale for this lower grade and I have to wait for people to catch up. Unfortunately at the time I did sign a letter to accept the new position, but I just want to to clarify that a company can legally freeze your salary and put you on a lower grade just because somebody else has left the company? I suspect because I signed the letter they can, but morally I think it stinks.

If you're hired by a federal government agency, do you generally start at the low end of the advertised salary range or can you negotiate your way toward the middle or high end? For example, if I'm currently making $55K at my current job and I want to apply for a federal job with a salary range of $50K to $70K, is there any way I can start at $60K?

I understand competition. Why should members of an industry drive the price down so low, that services are basically given away. Members of this industry, have made it unprofitable, to even compete.
In a "high volume, low price" market, members of an industry cut each others throat, by undercutting the competitons prices. It is hard to segement consumers into those who prefer "quality and service" and the majority who prefer "price and service".
I'm losing lots of money and I'm wasting lots of time.

Where does all the money go that is raised by having weddings/funerals/christenings and other services ? One of my team has been quoted a hideous figure for a wedding and asked whether I knew - I don't have a clue but am genuinely interested putting my views about church aside.

i'm starting to look at colleges, and therefore am also starting to consider careers. one of my career choices is an orthodontist. i know this sounds terribly materialistic, but i want a career that will give room to spend money as i please and not worry too much about not having enough money to last the rest of the month.

I think I am in love with my boss. I know it is stupid, I have been trying to fight this for months, but the feeling comes back. He is married and I am in a great relationship, but I find myself fantasizing (dangerously) about my boss. He is SO gorgeous, but he can be a bit of an a***le sometimes, well, like all bosses, I suppose. We work quite closely, as I am the "supervisor" in here, so avoiding contacts is not possible. I keep telling myself that is a dangerous situation to be in, but I am not listening....

It´s not like I want to cheat or anything, it is just that I can´t get him out of my mind - he is flirty and good looking, tall, a bit older (but only a bit) and fascinating most of the time. Then again, he can be bossy, too.
Before you sayit, I love my job and I can´t be moved to another lab. I am sort of in charge here...

I think when someone in your department quits, and you have to assume their duties, you should get a raise! But it doesn't seem to work like that. Why not?

We've had four vice presidents leave our company in the past week (yea, trouble here, long story). I'm sure they were all making six figures easy!

I think it would go really well to motivate the remaining employees to give everyone a 10% raise across the board, taken from the resigned employees salary that was budgeted!

Sounds like a good idea to me, we're all having to work all the more harder now, but sadly it never seems to work like this.

Why not?

Please help. I've been dying to get a job since I was 14. Now that I can get one I don't know what to do and how to do it. How do I ask for an application? Plus, if you can, give me some tips on how I can be more assertive and less shy because I know that will interfere with getting a job. Any suggestions? (hey I'm new to this!) :p

Ok, this promotion is anything near fancy. I am just a receptionist, we just lost our exec admin asst. my boss. I received this email.

I would like to ask you if you would be able to take on additional tasks, and if you would be available to devote more time if needed. We would like to offer you the opportunity to advance within the company and take on additional responsibilities.

Please advise your thoughts.

Not sure what I should say, or do. It is a step up for me. My hourly rate is 10.50 an hour. I really thought I wanted the job, but now I am faced with insecurties and fear of failing the job. I know for many of you making 40k+ a year this isn't a really big deal. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

I been working for this company around 1 year. Including me there is 3 workers. one of them came in just a week earlier than me.
They used to not be on time, talks bad about boss behind, and often through negative on whatever i suggest or opinion even in chatting but they good in acting in front of boss. Of course they are not totally useless. Beggining i thought doesnt matter, as long i do my job, My boss will realised. My boss like to pass the job to them and ask them to get anyonelse do together. They never gave it to me, especially my boss there. i did ask them many times, they never give. Today i realised something that i so stupid,i though as long i'm honest and not acting, my boss know it. It's not, my boss really though i did nothing that why both of them salary get increased double than mine. I so mad, because i even do the cleaning part which not my duty while they never do even is their rubbish....(this is because my boss never hire a cleaning lady)
