I didn't know everyone hated Wal-Mart. I take it you are in the US? We have a few Wal-Marts here in the UK and I think they are great, they sell everything which is so convenient for us lazy Brits!

This is a small question that has a big answer. For years now America's favorite company, Wal-Mart, has been under tough scrutiny. There are a couple of major reasons why.
Wal-Mart is a HUGE company with billions of dollars in annual sales. That means the corporation has enough buying power to negotiate the absolute lowest wholesale prices from manufacturers. They are able to manage more of their own supply chain, and do countless other things that smaller business can not justify financially. They are able to offer prices that small local businesses can not. This pulls business away from the small business, often driving them to close their doors for good. Effectively, former business owners and their employees go to work for a corporation that gives profits that used to stay in the local economy to shareholders all over the world. Ironically, the latest Sam's Club (big Wal-Mart) mantra, is "In business for small business." Are they talking about the same small businesses that they just put out of business?
Second, the lower level employees at Wal-Mart are not offered the same benefits package as are expected at many higher level jobs in the United States. Wal-Mart's Human Resources practices have been criticized by many saying their employees deserve better health and retirement benefits. A business offers what pay and benefits are necessary to retain employees with the skills, experience and education that are required to perform a certain task. To pay more than is necessary for a service is not smart business. If Wal-Mart's compensation package was truly insufficient, they would be unable to find employees and would have to offer more. This is not the case. Many of these entry level employees are performing a job that requires no education or experience and very little training which Wal-Mart itself provides. "Non-skilled labor" does not allow for exceptional pay or benefits, but Wal-Mart is constantly berated for not providing such things to all.
I worked at Wal-Mart for a while in high-school and was impressed. I had never had the option for retirement planning at all before. It seemed to be a friendly and growth-oriented culture.

Because people hate capitalism even though it's what our economy is founded on. Wal-Mart is a super-power and puts out thousands of small businesses, but that's the entire basis of capitalism. There has to be competition!
It is annoying that you have to buy at Wal-Mart or pay extra, but the alternative is communism or socialism I guess. So people need to get over it and just admire Wal-Mart for being such a smart and powerful business. Enjoy the cheap prices!

thank you all for clearing that up.. not every single person dislikes wal mart
americans though.. us americans disagree with them in principal. they pay their employees next to nothing, do not allow them to unionize, and offer them very few benefits. most products and intermediate production materials are imported and yes it DOES hurt the economy. as the single largest retailer in the world, the store thrives on its large volume and can sell products for much, much less than the average small business can. Wal-mart has put more businesses out than anything since the plague. i can't honestly say i don't shop there at all, but i try to avoid it. until some of that money we spend gets pumped back in to the economy through either higher wages or lower prices, i really wouldn't feel good about shopping there and destroying local business in the process.

wal-mart is so big. they basically rule the world. you can find a wal mart near anyone in the us. they shut down the small mans businesses.they are dominating ever side of the market. there will be a day where all we have to do is go to wal mart to do everything. we already can see an eye doctor, buy clothes, cds, food, magazines, etc. it seems you can't avoid going to wal mart because its everywhere.

I like wal-mart but did you know that Sam Walton expected his employees to be able to live off 35 dollars a day?

well where i live at we have a wal-mart the reason i don't like it. it put a shoe store out of business with less expensive shoes. but the shoes at the other store were semi-expensive but they were very good shoes and lasted along time. the shoes at wal-mart suck and mess up to easily. the put a lot of businesses out.

By the crowds that shop there I don't believe everyone hates Walmart. Much of it has to do with change, especially in small communities where family businesses feel threatened because they cannot compete with the volume prices Walmart sells goods for.

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't hate wal-mart. I don't have one in my area, but I do in a neighboring town, and on occasion, I go there.
