Ok, this promotion is anything near fancy. I am just a receptionist, we just lost our exec admin asst. my boss. I received this email.

I would like to ask you if you would be able to take on additional tasks, and if you would be available to devote more time if needed. We would like to offer you the opportunity to advance within the company and take on additional responsibilities.

Please advise your thoughts.

Not sure what I should say, or do. It is a step up for me. My hourly rate is 10.50 an hour. I really thought I wanted the job, but now I am faced with insecurties and fear of failing the job. I know for many of you making 40k+ a year this isn't a really big deal. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

You will only fail if you believe you will fail. Look at it this way. Weren't you scared to death when you first got your receptionist job? Werent you afraid you were goingt to mess everything up? Then you learned the job and it became like a second nature. The same thing will happen with this other position. The scariest part about it is the new title. It probably consists of work you already know how to do. Give yourself a chance to succeed. If they didnt feel you could do the work, you wouldnt have been offered the position.

I suggest that you ask for a job description so you know exactly what will be expected of you. You need to understand what is is that you are being asked to do.

Next, you need to find out if you will be getting any more money (very important!), and if you will receive any additional support in the new role.

When you have this information you need to arrange a meeting and frankly discuss the new role with whoever is the manager of the role.

Finally before yo make a decision you need to be sure that you've had all the information so that it is an informed decision. Don't let them rush you into anything.

Good luck!

This sounds like he wants you to keep doing your job and also extra duties. (I could be wrong). Some companies, instead of hiring an admin, they have a receptionist do filing, typing etc. If I were you, instead of e-mailing, I would go into this person's office and say, "I'm very interested in the new opportunity, but, I need to know the details before I say yes." You can also ask to let you try out for a month or so before making a final commitment.

Well, it is understandable that you feel that way but we don't we sometimes feel that anyway with any other situation... If you already know the company you already have some information just as much as the admin asst. But I would make sure that you can fulfill the job for the time and more task duty, could that be what is holding you back? Only you can answer that but have faith in your capabilities I am sure you will do very well.

good luck
