here in australia we don't really tip as a rule and don't want to do the wrong thing over there. under what circumstances do you tip? and how much? eg. taxis hotels hairdressers, restaurants, bars

We have just been away once and we invited another family who also brought their extended family along consisting of the x lodger and newphew. It was a nightmare for my partner as she found out on the third night the other family had been slagging her and our kids off. The so called friend spent the entire holiday making snidy remarks whilst the lodger and newphew ran out of money and scrounged off the rest of us.
