hey, take no more than 7 outfits.. definitely DO NOT pack for all four weeks, that's just stupid! since you're going to austria and switz, take summer wear, but do remember to pack in one jumper/sweater, a jacket and a hat - this is because you'll most probably visit the alps, etc, and these are snow-capped 365 days a year, so still quite cool. also, without a doubt, take your comfortable walking/sports shoes. and yes, if you plan to visit anywhere romantic/formal (e.g. casinos, top restaurants, clubs), then it's quintessential you have a formal outfit with you - either your national dress or then shirt, skirt/trousers (no jeans), shoes (no sports shoes).
i'm austrian and had been to switz in peak july season, and trust me you, i needed the wools the day we went on the alps! also, make sure that if you're going to switz, you visit the Jungfraujoch mountains - out of this world..... you'll never see anything quite as beautiful! enjoy your trip

It depends from the season you travel in, and on what you plan to do. As a rule, I always take 2 top for each bottom - they get dirty faster, and it is easier to mix and match. you will always find a laundrymat, so you can pack for about 10 days, and plan to find a wash place each week...
p.ex. if you go hiking, 3 pairs of hiking pants, one or 2 pairs of shorts, perhaps one or two skirts for shopping times, and a dress. Plan to have a favorite outfit with you for going out, and 2-3 pairs of comfy shoes (plan to buy shoes in Italy, great choice and quality) - one pair for walking, one comfy for outing. Color coding is a good idea, stick to one dominant color - either black or brown, or blue... so shoes and outfits match and you can combine.
If you work it well, it will all fit in a small bag. Happy travelling!!

From my experience, id say pack light you don't need that many out fits. Europe has the best fashion and so many other things, you will find and buy heaps. So packing light means you can leave the old stuff and bring back all the cool things you find.

Don't take too much clothes with you, cause you ain't gonna wear them all, the suitcases will be very heavy and you're gonna buy clothes there too anyway. Try to take more casual outfits and a few evening pieces if you' re planning to go out a lot!

I say pack for the four weeks. Unless u were staying w/ someone who would let you do laundry. I would say a little bit of everything although i'm not quite sure on the weathere there, but its just incase a freak storm or heat happens. Have fun on ur trip.

I would say five tops and five bottoms that you can mix and match. Take a nice going out outfit too and then you can supplement your wardrobe with what you purchase there.
