I think the levees on the Mississippi River are fine and proven. Everyone knew the levees down in St.Bernard, and Plaquimines Parishes would not hold in a storm like Katrina. The Ninth ward, and New Orleans east, were compromised in Betsy, and I would not live there. The canal breeches, should be resolved, and the majority of the city made safe, with the new gates the corps are building.

The original levees that were built a hundred years ago held up fine. It was the modern levees that broke. The entire system, however, was an engineering marvel in the early days, as was the pumping system. New Orleans was a model for the Netherlands who built dykes (levees) and used the NO pumping technology to claim their land from the Zee.

A study was done about 10 or 15 years ago. At that time they knew the levees wouldn't hold out against anything above cat 3, but they figured the chances of a larger hurricane hitting and resulting costs would be less than the costs of updating the levees to cat 5. The gamble did not pay off.

I think it is sooo sad that we can fight missiles, we can send space shuttle to space but we cant build levees to withstand a category 2 hurricance much less a category 5. I left from NO when the hurricane hit and i am very sad at the lack of progress they have made to fix them. I wanted to go back but as i have said many times before i am not going to live in a city built like a swimming pool. The other day it rained real hard and the power went out across the city. Can you imagine another hurricane?SCARY especially since my parents are still there.

That mean old levee, taught me weep and moan
Got what it takes to make a country boy leave his home
All last night, I sat on the levee and pray
When the levee breaks, I'll have no place to stay....
