My husband and I acquired this special baseball after a death in our family. It's from the 1951 Yankees and has 24 signatures on it. It has been in a case and all the names are clear and readable. From what I've heard from the uncle who passed on about this ball is that it is unique because in 1951 it was Joe DiMaggio's year that he retired and it was also Mickey Mantle's rookie year...both of their names are among those signed on this ball. The list of names on the ball is: Bob Kuzava, Ed Lopat, Tom Morgan, Joe Ostrowski, Stubby Overmire, Allie Reynolds, Art Schallock, Spec Shea, Yogi Berra, Ralph Houk, Charlie Silvera, Jim Brideweser, Bobby Brown, Jerry Coleman, Joe Collins, Johnny Hopp, Gil McDougald, Johnny Mize, Phil Rizzuto, Gank Bauer, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Gene Woodling. I also know that in 1951 the Yankees crushed the Giants Cinderella season and won the World Series.
We think we have something special here and plan on getting it appraised.

The Yankees have 28 games left for the season and this is how it breaks down:
6 Games against Tampa Bay. Season record 8-3
6 Games against Baltimore. Season record 4-8
7 Games against Toronto. Season record 6-4
3 Games against Seattle. Season record 3-4
3 Games against Kansas City. Season record 6-2
3 Games against Boston. Season record 8-7
13 of the 28 games are against teams with winning records

WILD CARD:
Seattle has 30 games left to play. 20 of those 30 games are against teams with winning records including:
3 against Toronto
3 against Detroit
3 against the Yankees
4 against the Angels
3 against Cleveland
--------------------------------------------
American League East
Boston:
28 games left to play and 15 against teams with losing records

Should make an interesting final month to the season. thoughts?

Anybody else think he's gonna be the next sinkerball/overpowering pitcher?
He was pitching a no-hitter until the 7th against the RED SOX!!!!
And what else do you think he will do before he retires, career milestones you believe he will reach.

Okay before you read this don't start the yankee's suck and boston rules ****!! This is a serious question and i wan't some good opinions.

I'm not a Yankee fan or a Boston fan I'm a tigers fan but there's something that urk's me a little.

Joe Torre is praised by people to be one of the best coaches in the majors and that he's so great and all of these things but little do people remember he was 894-1003 before he went to coach the yankee's.

Do you think that he is a good coach or do you just think that he is one of those cases of being in the right place at the right time?? (or just having all the best players?)

If it's simply an assumption that all athletes are better today, I don't know if there's any point to discussing it.
But I look at the generally much better mechanics and leg kick of earlier pitchers, check the stats, watch documentaries and clips, read extensively on baseball history...and I simply cannot see it.
I don't think that old-time players are automatically better. But I don't think they're automatically worse, either.

So what would lead someone to claim that pitchers today are simply better? Is it evidence or ignorance?

Whoever helps me understand this best will get the points and the thanks of a grateful nation.

They planted spied in scoreboards to steal signs of the opponent. They would hold on to uniforms to slow down baserunners.

Ever Heard of the spitball? Baseballs being scuffed? Corked bats? Using vaseline, razors, articles to scuff the ball?

If you deny this you are no baseball historian. McGwire, Bonds, Sosa.....on to the Hall of Fame. Mantle would have done it if he thought it would have improved his bad knees.

These guys used beer to cool off before there were airconditioned clubhouses. These guys WOULD have taken any competitive advantage available to them....and you know it!

going into yesterdays game (i dont know if he still is) had 9 home runs, 49 rbi, and is not in the top five fielding shortstops, so what is so great. Yankee fans dont talk about the past cuz that is all you ever do. (i.e. 26 rings)
