They have an EASY schedule vs. anyone else in the AL until the end. A true Yankees fan (like me) knows they can take the AL East, and that's what you shoot for (that's why you play). The Red Sox know they have problems with the Yankees, and their fans have been skittish for months -- in fact, 3 weeks ago they were throwing rocks at Ramirez and Big Papi himself, along with this year's whipping boys: JD Drew & Lugo. They don't think they can beat Andy Pettitte and Wang, at all...
The Yankees have games with TB and slumping Seattle coming up -- and this is their season, before them. They can play .700-.800 ball the rest of the way.
Of course, you have to play the games -- and batting Abreu 3rd is hurting them every game (2/11 vs. Red Sox, 1 rbi).. they can always fall back into that frustrating team-batting slump. Torre's revolving door of Damon/Giambi/Betemit insures exactly none of them get into a hitting groove.
Torre's absurd lineups puts more pressure on the starting pitching -- especially since they really hardly ever score in the 1st inning!! I'd hope for Abreu batting 2nd, to protect any leadoff hitter -- and allow steals (vs. the open-view during Jeter ABs). In fact, Jeter-Arod-Giambi/Posada should be 3-4-5 all season long, based on who they are, what they can do.. Abreu is NOT a #3 batter for this team, maybe the Phils.. but not the NY Yankees (only Torre treats him as such, because he used Abreu to rid him of Gary Sheffield in his clubhouse).
If we can play LESS politics.. and focus on a better batting order.. the Yankees will be unbeatable.

While I don't see them taking the East I have to say they definitely have a shot at the Wild Card. I am one to admit when I am wrong and I was one who said I didn't think the Yankees had a shot in the world to make the playoffs even a month ago but they have been stepping it up even against the big boys in the A.L....I still think the Mariners have a shot too (they do have two more games than the Yankees left to play) so that series in the Bronx starting 9-3 is going to be huge...I think whoever wins that series takes the Wild Card...but who knows...baseball is crazy! I will say if the Sox take the East and the Yankees make the Wild Card I hope the Yankees get beat in the first round because they seem to play their best baseball against the Sox.

Boston is in trouble offensively... Ortiz is the only one hitting and without Manny protecting him for a good week now teams aren't going to be pitching to him too much the rest of the year. They also have only been hitting the white sox and are done with them so now that they have to play teams like the Orioles and Yankees who they can't beat, the AL East is once again a race. I'm not saying it's gonna be easy for the Yankees to catch Boston but with this upcoming schedule for the Yankees and Boston starting to wear down (Dice-K will reach a career high in innings pitched in his next start IF he can make it through 5) this is still a possibility. If people want to write off the Yankees for a 3rd time this year go ahead and be my guest, but it ain't over til its over!!!!
Btw THIS IS WHAT BASEBALL IS ALL ABOUT under 30 games to go and 5 division leads less than 5 games. No other sport works like this it's great.

The schedule does appear to favor the Redsox now doesn't it? Stranger things have happened in Baseball. The Mariners have the worst schedule to contend with. You forgot Detroit who is only 3 games back of the WC. Their schedule isnt that much better than Seattle. I say the Yankees get in with the Wild Card.

it will be interesting. the m's have to play the yanks, angels, indians, tigers and jays. that IS NOT going to be easy and they're already starting to falter in their last few series so the yanks will get the wildcard. i see the yanks winning the majority of the upcoming series thay play. we have winning records against a lot of those teams. and we'll hopefully win the boston series. you didnt list bostons schedule so i cant realy comment on that.

The Yankees should win the Wild Card, but it is going to be really close. The Red Sox are going to win the division though.

Casapulla, is a true Yankees fan a completely ignorant idiot?
There is no chance the Yankees will take the division. The wild card, well, time will tell.
I agree with J Homer.

I just checked, of the 28 remaining games, the Yanks
have 13 home games, and 15 road games.
The Red Sox also have 28 games left, and they have 18
home games, and 10 road games......................
