Can you "choose" to prefer the smell of moth balls to fresh baked bread?

Can you "choose" to prefer brussel sprouts over cotton candy?

Can you "choose" what you believe, or does your mind automatically sort the unbelieveable from the believeable?

little to no say when it comes to children and the right to life?
If a woman wants to abort her baby in a marraige or out of marraige she does not even have to consider the man? I know a Man who wanted a child he bore with a woman and she decided *no* she was getting rid of it, even though he said he would take care of it wanted nothing from her, she said *it's my body, yet his seed mattered not.

Pretty hypocritical for some here to say homosexuals should have there day yet many men and unborn children have no say? why is that? because they have no voice?

The Family I guess is a old tradition that has no meaning in such a High Technological Society where the secular screamers are the ones to call the shots huh?

We should form a peaceful movement to prove to everyone that faith is the main problem with theistic religion. It is faith that attempts to justify belief and devotion without any understanding. Without understanding, an individual is far more likely to form untrue beliefs for an undeniably ridiculous reason(s), lacking any valid argument (ie, with factual or sensible support). Without a valid argument, it is hard to progress in society, not only in academic subjects, but also in being able to live together. Disagreements that can't be resolved because they have no valid arguments lead to hate, and hate to war.
However, without faith, people would be able to look at their beliefs seriously, and form valid arguments for believing so. With valid arguments, people can more easily exchange ideas in an intellectual manner, without irrationality or redundancy, and far less anger. There would be less hate and less war, and no one would be irrationally afraid of new ideas. Any thoughts?

if your belief doesn't follow this process, do you see any problems with this process?

How to Believe in God
Six Easy Steps

1. First, you must want to believe in God.
2. Next, understand that believing in God in the absence of evidence is especially noble.
3. Then, realize that the human ability to believe in God in the absence of evidence might itself constitute evidence for the existence of God.
4. Now consider any need for further evidence (both in yourself and in others) to be a form of temptation, spiritually unhealthy, or a corruption of the intellect.
5. Refer to steps 2-4 as acts of “faith.”
6. Return to 2.

I became a believer 6 months ago. Right after, a serie of very unpleasant incidents happened: my mother kicked me out of the house, I broke up with my bofriend after 7 years and I was expelled from school. How do you explain this?

does anyone have advice for a quarter life crisis
im 25, have been in my first job for a little over two years now, i have a degree and all of a sudden feel this isn't what i should be doing, meanwhile all of my friends are getting married, having kids, are in a job they love and are getting houses. i can only afford a studio right now. im not concerned with materialistic items but they seem to be going through all these changes and are so happy with them and my life is so stagnant. im not complaining and i am very happy for all of them but im just extremely bored and dont know how to change it. i exercise, read and cook for hobbies and for the most part can be very happy alone so i dont need a huge social scene. im embarrassed to talk to any of my friends about this because they think i have it all together, which i do for the most part. i guess to make a long story short i dont know what to do with my life right now.

When discussing proof of God's existence, I also get a lot of talk of faith and being responsible if you choose not to believe.

First of all, the definition of faith is belief without proof, so having faith does NOT prove anything. It simply means that you believe something that you can't prove, otherwise it wouldn't be faith.

Second, you can not choose to believe something, you either believe it or you don't. You can choose to say you believe something (or don't). You can even choose to live your life by it (or not). But that doesn't mean you truly beleive it (or don't believe it). A person has no choice in whether or not they TRULY believe. Therefore, how can one be responsible for their faith or lack thereof?

And he is believed to be God, thus incapable of sin, and there was no problem with him doing so, then why do many Christian churches today believe that any amount of wine (or any alcohol for that matter) intake is sinful? Isn't that an oxymoron or is he only allowed to do so because he is God?

Look deep inside yourself and give me an honest answer to this hypothetical. If you were born into, for example, a devout moslem family, went to Mosque 5 days a week, prayed and read the Koran--wouldn't you be just as devout a moslem. Wouldn't you be absolutely sure than Allah was the one true God. If you have the guts to answer yes to this, then doesn't that say that religion is more about what you were brought up (moslems and christians i almost would say brainwashed) to believe and not about the actual "truth" of the religion.

I am LDS and in a lot of the posts people say that if you don't believe in the "Trinity" as seems to be defined in the Nicene Creed you are not Christian. Where in the Bible does it say that you are only a Christian if you believe in the Nicene concept of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost?

Give me any history book any history at all that states *Marraige* was not created for the protection of the *Family* take any religious
factors from it. If marragie was not created, a woman could have sex with all types of men, claim who she wanted as the Father.

Even if a woman commits adultery and becomes pregnant her husband has always been assumed to be the father.

Legal property rights have always been in place for Children, realitives heck Helmsely left her property to Fido.

My question is, if your up to challenge is Marraige has been created for a FAMILY not 2 people that hook up and are worried about property rights they have those rights.. So why not be satiasfied ?Marragie was never intended for gay couples leave the word alone and I am sure people of faith will leave you alone and support your legal rights to one another
Thoughts?

"That notion that things can just get changed is scary for a lot of people who worry that a church with a very strong authority center could influence a public leader by suddenly getting a new revelation that has an impact on public policy." This was said by Rev. Mouw, of the Southern Baptist church, about the LDS church, and having a Mormon in the Oval Office. My question is, what revelation could POSSIBLY impact public policy to THIS degree? I don't know what revelation could possibly be this important?

Do you have any ideas?

I am 20 years old, and I live with my parents. I have been an Atheist since I was about 10 years old. I have an A-level in Philosophy and my reasoning is just about as informed as it gets. There is absolutely nothing that would ever make me believe in God.

My dad is the leader of a "Christian Rock" group, and my mum helps him everything to do with the church. I fear that I will be kicked out of the house if I tell my parents the truth. However, I have a place to go if I am.

For the last 10 years I have gone to church, listening to the bull**** that they talk there, pretending I am a Christian to make my parents happy. My parents want me to help them out with a PowerPoint presentation at a concert they are holding this Sunday. I have to either carry on pretending and waste more of my time (which really sickens me, to be perfectly honest) or tell them the truth.

Should I Tell My Parents I'm Not A Christian?
